This week marks the 6 th annual Women of Aviation Worldwide Week which aims to foster gender balance in the air and space industry. Here at the IET Aerospace Network we are celebrating by taking a look at some of the inspiring women of the aerospace industry. Today we are celebrating Pancho Barnes (1901 – 1975). She established a career as an aviator and movie stunt pilot who was one of the first American women to build a career in aerospace. Barnes came from a wealthy family who married a clergyman at 18 years old. She was unsuited to the life of a wife and mother and so she left her family for a while. It is at this time she began wearing men’s clothes and travelled through Mexico. In 1928 she bought her first airplane and hired an instructor. She made her first flight after only 6 hours…
IET Central London lecture, Savoy Place, Wednesday 10th February 2016 Our speaker this evening was Murat Basarir, Business Development Manager in MASP * We heard a short, yet informative overview of the on-going trial of inductive charging for electric buses in Milton Keynes (a technical hitch preventing us from seeing a supporting video, which was a shame). On the plus side, there was enough time for a great many questions; an indication of the interest and passions aroused by this topic. So far, the results and feedback have been very positive. Today we are looking at Elizabeth ‘Bessie’ Coleman (1892 – 1926) who was the first female African American international pilot. She was also the first American woman to hold a pilot’s license. Bessie Coleman was the grandchild of slaves, her parents were illiterate and her prospects were extremely limited. With passion for education Coleman would read aloud to her family. She promised them that she would amount to something and set her sights on aviation. At the time there were no Africa American pilots in the area and no white pilots…
On Saturday 27 Feb 2016, Simon Lonsdale of ChargePoint gave a very stimulating presentation on the current state of EVs, Charging, and Self-Driving Vehicles as well as a glimpse into what the near future has in store for us. This talk certainly interested the local network as over 20 people attended the seminar. The talk started with a look at the number of EVs currently in the US and the approaches manufacturers are taking to encourage people to switch from gasoline; be it access to HOV lanes, the availability of charge points, or the price to fill up an electric tank. Amongst engineers, safety and in particular electrical safety, was of great interest and sparked a lot of discussion amongst the attendees. I was recently referred to by one of my volunteers as being a ‘Nerd’… This was because I said that my own IET membership number was easy to remember and he replied that he thought I was a Nerd because of it. Personally though, I consider myself to be more Geek than Nerd … However, in my defence (although I wear my Geek/part Nerd badge with pride) I did state that it was because of the way I remember and memorise things. For me, my IET membership number has a rhythmic pattern in the way it is said which is easy for me to remember. I’m sure some of you will remember learning the alphabet from watching the television programme ‘Sesame Street’ and some of you (like me) will even admit to singing the tune (we all know it!) in your head when recalling where specific letters sit. The inaugural launch of the Singapore Faraday Challenge Day took place between the 12th and 15th December 2015 and was a resounding success. The challenge was Mission to Mars . Singapore did it a little differently by targeting Singapore self-help organisations and the general public in order to increase awareness of the programmes and to let more people benefit from the challenge. The challenge started with an ice breaking Bingo session led by volunteer Huang Lingxi, generating much excitement among the participants as they networked in the group, making new friends and finding out about themselves. The event was made as real life as possible. Project teams were formed randomly and most of the members did not know each other. Despite this, they worked together, embracing their diversity…

The event went well and I left with some interesting thoughts. It is really refreshing to witness the start of what I believe will be a paradigm shift in many aspects of everyday life. The move from purchase of the asset to purchase of the use was very interesting an I do feel that the benefits of this direction is now starting to reach technology facilitators and system integrators. This is key. If this model is to gain traction and not fail or fall short due to development within silos then a system integration approach is essential. Smart Cities are not just about eco-driven buildings and smart metering for energy albeit that these are very important. With the prospect of a totally new development in London where Cross Rail meets HS2 there is the prospect of a fully integrated transport…

A total of fifteen (15) agenda items were discussed during the CCAP meeting in Singapore. During the meeting members present obtained updates and discussed among others about CRC, finance, matters arising from each Local Networks, regional PATW 2016, Global CVC 2016 as well as the CCAP Strategy . The meeting chaired by Dr Karla Smith, from New Zealand. Also in attendance were, Mr Thomas Yi [Senior Staff Member], Ms Isabel Hui [Staff Member, Secretary], Dr Derek Boardman (Australia), Dr Bicky Bhangu (Singapore), Dr Edmund Lai (New Zealand), Dr Tang Shi Siong (Brunei), Mr Wee Ser Tan (Malaysia, YP representative) and Mr David Yiu (Hong Kong, YP representative).

A call for papers has been issued for the event Telecommunications in the Aftermath of WW1: Civilian and Military Perspectives The First World War was the first multinational conflict which engaged substantially with electrical communication. It saw extensive use of telephony on the battlefield as well as significant early technological developments in and military use of wireless systems; it is now well recognized that the War had a deep impact on the technology and practice of telecommunications. Professor Andrew Harrison from the Diamond Light Source , gave an excellent IET Cambridge Network Prestige Lecture at Churchill College on Thursday 25/2/16. Andrew's interesting and informative talk covered both the Diamond facility and the use of the synchrotron for research and other applications. The talk, which was organsied by the IET, IoP and the I Mech E, attracted 200 attendees who participated in an active Q&A session. Thanks go to Andrew for his talk.
