  • Get involved in 2016-17

    The start of the new IET 2016-17 session and time to look forward.  The Radar, Sonar and Navigation TPN have been dormant for a little while, but we are now looking to rebuild this and need your help. With the help of a few key individuals (I won’t single you out Darren, Ediz, Mik and James) but with their input we have managed to get a few ideas to float and now are ready to go to the next level -  supersonic (forgive the sonar pun).  This international group is the home of an extensive community of scientists and engineers with an interest in all aspects of radar, sonar and navigation systems.   We want to keep the international link, so are looking for interested scientists and engineers to join the RS&N Executive Committee, helping to shape the direction and priorities of the network.   • Professor Noel Sharkey launches Best Robot Wars Female Role Model Award at IET Eng Fest!

    Professor Noel Sharkey is Emeritus professor of Robotics and Artificial Intelligence, University of Sheffield, Chair of the International Committee for Robot Arms Control and co-director of the Foundation for Responsible Robotics, as well as Head Judge of BBC Robot Wars and an IET Fellow. Noel lauched his new award for Best Robot Wars Female Role Model at the IET Engineering the Future Festival.     Congratulations to Winner of IET Mountbatten Medal 2016, Professor Jean Armstrong, BSc MSc PhD FIEEE FIEAust MIET, Department of Electrical and Computer Systems Engineering, Monash University Australia.   The Medal celebrates individuals who have made an outstanding contribution over a period of time, to the promotion of electronics or information technology and their application.  The award will be presented to Medal winner at the IET Achievement Awards Ceremony 16th Nov 2016 in London.     Many of us complete CPD without even realising we are doing so. The new piece of software you used, the seminar you attended or the article you read are all forms of CPD when relevant to your career. With this is mind completing the required annual amount of 30 hours is easily attainable.  What is changing and why? The IET has chosen to adhere to The Engineering Council’s aspiration that by January 2017 all Professional Engineering Institutions will have introduced a policy of random reviewing of Professionally Active Registrants’ CPD returns.  The IET’s Board of Trustees extended this as a benefit to all IET Members.   • Best Robot Wars Role Model Award - Launched by Professor Noel Sharkey

    Noel Sharkey is an IET Fellow, Professor of Artificial Intelligence and Robotics and Public Engagement University of Sheffield. He is Chair elect of the International Committee for Robot Arms Control and an advocate at the UN. Noel is a principle spokesperson for a large international coalition of NGOs: the Campaign to Stop Killer Robots. He is also co-director of the Foundation for Responsible Robotics which concretizes ethical issues in robotics. But Noel is best known to the public as head judge in every series of BBC’s Robot Wars.   • Railway Network Visit to SWT-NR Basingstoke Campus

    An interesting day out. After less than 2 minutes’ instruction I was in charge of an 8 car Desiro train doing 100mph!  OK, maybe I overshot the station by 4 car lengths, but I didn’t go through any red signals!  My fellow drivers had it worse though, in a very short space of time they had cracked windscreens, road vehicle incursions,  driving rain, thick fog and heavy snow.  No, this wasn’t a typical autumn day but a very enjoyable day spent at the Basingstoke Campus a joint venture between South West Trains and Network Rail to train operating staff (drivers, guards etc.) as well as maintainers.  We were initially given an overview of the centre by Mark Ellis then Brian Kimber (both of South West Trains) gave us a very detailed and illuminating presentation on not only what they (South West…

    So, September has been and gone, and as October brings the start of the 2016-17 session, I thought I would take a little time to reflect on our recent activities and highlight some of our successess.   • Satellite Systems & Applications - Community Manager's Perspective
