    I had the opportunity last week to listen to a presentation by Olivier Ezratty on innovation in technology. He is a very enthusiastic speaker on technology. His subject was particularly the pressures for innovation: the opportunites presented by new, cheaper, components development, and the social development of people which pushes for more and more in products.   • Monthly Joint Institutions Networking Meeting

    I would like to remind those of you who are in Paris this month that the Institutions' (ICE, IET, IMechE, IStructE) joint networking and social evening of 2014 will be held next Thursday 16th October2014 from 19h00 at Carr's bar and restaurant, 1 rue Mont Thabor, Paris 75001 (Métro Line 1 Tuileries) . Spouses,partners and friends welcome. This regular event takes place the 3rd Thursday of each month. There will be an optional group dinner from about 20h30. Ian Dewsbury and Graham Hobbins for the ICE French LA and Phil Dunbar for the IET will be hosting the evening and they look forward to seeing you there for a drink and chat about past and future Institution events in 2014.

  • Appropriate Healthcare Technologies (AHT) 2014

    The 8th International conference promoting access to healthcare through technology took place from 17 - 18 September 2014 in London. This two day conference brought together healthcare technologists, clinicians, researchers and public bodies from around the world to explore effective engineering solutions to meet the healthcare problems in low resource settings. Delegates were provided with a great opportunity to learn about the key issues surrounding healthcare provision in the developing world with around 22 countries represented at the event including a couple of Skype presentations. The IET (and the IEE before it) have been holding these two-yearly events on appropriate healthcare technologies (AHT) since the year 2000.   • London Critical Data Marathon 2014

    The Healthcare Technologies network was proud to sponsor the London Critical Data Marathon which took place over the 6th and 7th September 2014 alongside parallel events in Paris, France and Massachusetts, USA. The event ran over the course of the whole weekend and brought frontline healthcare providers and data scientists together to answer clinically-relevant questions. The main focus of the event was for the participants to work with the MIMIC-II which is a large open access ICU database. It empowers those who have not typically engaged in research but who possess a deep understanding of the information gaps as well as the elements involved in practice, to contribute to and become part of a data-driven learning system.   • Wikimedia Edit-a-thon Event

    To celebrate Ada Lovelace Day this month the IET is working with Wikimedia to run an edit-a-thon for our members. We are offering you the opportunity for a training and networking day, co-sponsored by Wikimedia UK. This is part of a worldwide celebration of Ada Lovelace Day, a focus point for activities around women in STEM careers, named after the first computer programmer. You will learn how to edit Wikipedia, and will work together to create and improve articles about female engineers as women are under-represented on Wikipedia, both as participants and as subjects of biographies. You will have the chance to network with engineers from other companies, to discuss initiatives that support women in their careers. We will be inviting trade press to document these positive steps.     Building on the success of the Regional Event held in Edinburgh in January, there are three events being held on 29 th November at Dynamic Earth in Edinburgh, on 2 nd December at the Glasgow Science Centre and on 10 th December at Aberdeen’s Satrosphere. Ten teams of young people will be competing at each of these events to see which team goes forward to the National Final, with the possibility of going on to the World Final in America at which in 2013 and this year, a team from Britain was the overall winner. The 30 teams competing in Scotland have been very encouraged by being able to have dedicated coaches and assistant engineer mentors providing support as they hone their skills ready to meet the challenges on the day.     I am honoured to serve the Robotics and Mechatronics TNP as the Chairman in 2014. This is an exciting time for robotics in particular and for mechatronics in general. This is represented by the establishment of Public-Private Partnership in Robotics by European Commission and organisations representing European industry and European research in 2012 to provide more funding to boost the research, innovation and applications of robotics in Europe. It is expected to received €700M in funding from the Commission for 2014 – 2020 and €2100 million from European industry to form the largest civilian-funded robotics innovation programme in the world.   • Munich Underground Visit

    Munich Underground Visit Just before the end of the Bavarian school holidays we organised a visit to the Munich sewers. We expected that there would be lots of parents anxious to see their kids out of the way for an hour or two. Instead of children, eight adults turned up who, with a guide from the Munich City Drainage Department ( Münchner Stadtentwässerung ), descended into the depths. The previous night it had rained so heavily that the water in the Munich sewer was too high to receive visitors. Fortunately, the guide had an alternative in mind. In Schwabing we descended into the " Jägerkanal ", built by British engineers in the 19th century under the direction of Max von Pettenkofer . The original bricks were still in good condition, apart from the odd bit of repaired bomb damage. By the…
