    The IET Functional Safety TPN was heavily involved in the Environmental and Safety Assurance Symposium (ESAS) 2016 which is the MOD’s flagship Symposium focusing on Equipment Safety and Environmental Management.  Working in partnership with MOD, DE&S, Atkins and IIRSM, the IET FS TPM were involved in keynotes, speakers, chairing a topic, reviewing papers, reviewing awards, presenting awards.   • Frazer-Nash Consultancy Win IET ‘Innovation In Safety’ Award At ESAS16

    In recognition of the work to help solve the challenge of the SS Richard Montgomery, Frazer-Nash has been awarded The Institution of Engineering and Technology's Innovation in Safety Award - presented as part of the first ever ESAS Safety and Environmental Management Awards . The winner was determined by an independent panel of judges as part of the MOD’s bi-annual Environmental & Safety Assurance Symposium (ESAS16) which was held at DE&S Headquarters at Abbey Wood in Bristol. The ship was wrecked off the Nore sandbank in the Thames Estuary, near Sheerness in 1944 with 1,400 tonnes of munitions on board.   • IET Nigeria Holds Their First CAD Workshop

    IET Nigeria held their first CAD workshop for students and  Young Professional's on 4th July 2016 with the aim of: -  Creating awareness about the IET and its benefits for Engineering, Science and Technology professionals -  CAD Session -  PATW awareness and the need to volunteer inorder to make a difference in one's profession   The workshop was to share relevant and up to date information on CAD with undergraduates of Science, Technology and Engineering, taking them through practical techniques on developing industry relevant designs and drafts, inspiring young people on the relevance of CAD in pursuing a successful career  and  highlighting the crucial role in career development and sharing cutting edge technical knowledge on CAD.  This should hopefully help the young people to create jobs…

  • International Robotics Showcase

    Friday, 1st July saw the culmination of the first UK Robotics week at the International Robotics Showcase event held at IET London: Savoy Place. The event was opened by Professor Philip Nelson , Chief Executive of ESPRC and Professor Jeremy Watson, who is President elect of IET.   Professor Watson will deliver his IET President's Address on 6 October 2016 on the subject of " The Interdisciplinary jigsaw - developing the Engineering Future " at the IET's  Future of Engineering Festival   Delegates heard from an amazing line up of incredible speakers from UK, Europe, Korea, Singapore, Japan, USA to name a few, covering, in the morning session,  diverse subjects such as autonomous vehicles, unmanned systems in extreme environments, robotics and space exploration missions, future of automation…

  • Education Robotics Hackathon 2016

    Big thank you to all the wonderful people who were involved in our Hackathon during June. The challenge was to design a prototype educational robot for use in schools and homes -  to create something new, fun and educational for kids, parents and teachers. The hackathon took place over a two week period in June, culminating in the final weekend hack with all teams getting together in a shared hackspace 18-19 June.   Participants were from various background - ranging from designers, engineers, educators and scientitsts and throughout the two weeks, many ideas were generated by each team. On the final hackathon weekend, teams received their selected components and started hacking. In the process, teams discovered a lot of obstacles in building the robots they wanted to.     Devon & Cornwall’s local PATW winner, Charlotte Levy, has won the South West regional final with her presentation “The Science of Chocolate” and will now go forward to the UK final to be held in Glasgow.   Whilst chocolate doesn’t immediately spring to mind when thinking about science and engineering, you’ll never look at a bar of chocolate in the same way again… In its natural state, the cocoa bean is bitter to taste and almost unrecognisable from the sweet delights available to purchase, and it’s in this transformation through developing knowledge of chocolate chemistry that science and engineering comes into play.   Charlotte’s presentation looked at the basic chemical principles behind the production of chocolate which brings together scientists, engineers and chocolatiers to create aesthetically…

  • IET Global Volunteers Conference 2016

    Over 300 volunteers from across the IET and around the world attended the IET Global Volunteers Conference 2016 at IET London: Savoy Place, to share ideas and learn from each other. It was a great opportunity for delegates to gain insight on how to implement the IET’s strategy, improve volunteer engagement of members and develop “one-team” working across the IET ( #IETOneTeam ). The conference actually combined six volunteering events into one week to coincide with the Members Annual Information Event (16 June, available on IET.TV ).  Other events included Registration and Standards Training, Mentor Training, Communities Volunteer Conference (CVC), Education Volunteers, Council, and the Young Professionals Community Volunteering Conference, culminating in a plenary session on Friday, 17 June…

  • Is The Age Of Cyber Warfare Officially Upon Us: The IET Wants To Find Out...

    Some say that 2016 might go down in history as a turning point in the Age of Cyber Warfare. Unlike the Hiroshima bombing in 1945 that signified the era of Nuclear WMD (Weapons of Mass Destruction) confrontation, the US “cyber bombs” fell down on the infrastructure of ISIS completely silently. Even though they did not cause destruction anywhere near on the scale of Hiroshima it does not mean they went unnoticed or might have lesser significance. In fact, some critics say that cyber attacks should be treated as WMD.     Identifying advances, challenges and opportunities for motion sensing systems in heathcare, the Human Motion Analysis for Healthcare event on 19th May 16 at Savoy Place brought together researchers, academics, technologists and professionals all working in related fields to discuss a variety of presentations,  posters and network with fellow professionals.  With four keynote speakers from Microsoft; and Warwick, Bristol and St George's Universities a key theme running through all was how the technology will transform healthcare delivery, particularly enabling passive healthcare monitoring for the user/ patient.
