Most of Graham's experience comes from his many years with Rolls Royce aeroengines; Manufacturing is a key to him: to create wealth, you can dig it up, grow it or combine the two in Manufacturing. A key learning is that innovation touches everything, not just technology, although that was the focus this evening. The Institute of Measurement & Control, Central North-West Group have a lecture on Cybersecurity and Wireless Instrument Systems on Tuesday 17th May 2016, 18:00 for 18:30. The lecture will be given by Mr Jeff Melrose, Principal Technology Strategist for Cybersecurity at Yokogawa USA . Prior to his assignment with Yokogawa, Mr. Melrose was Principal Security Engineer at Lockheed-Martin and at Raytheon designing secure systems for the US military. In those roles, he led Security Designers creating secure wireless technologies, developing secure networks and cryptographic infrastructures for the most paranoid of customers. Why It Always Pays To Pay Attention

Picture the scene… It’s March 2014 and I’m at TV Connect with a colleague. We want to gather some video content for one of our online communities so we’re attending with the intention of interviewing, on camera, some of the exhibitors at the show. All is going well and we have a couple of interviews under our belt, however, my colleague is suddenly taken ill and has to return home… So… I’m left alone and with a video camera…. As my colleague was taking care of the AV side of our partnership (with me as the interviewer) it makes things a bit tricky as I now have to work the AV technology AND conduct the interviews too! The IET Women's Network is launching it's first ever Coder Dojo ever CoderDojo event in our Stevenage office 30 April, where young people, between 7 and 17, can learn how to code, develop websites, apps, programs, games and explore technology. Hopefully 1st of April went by without you being enticed to click that link or hoaxed into falling for that prank. If you were able to catch and stop the joke before it progressed, then its likely that same level of mindfullness needs to be applied every time you get online...seriously!. 'Seeing the Invisible’: Our next talk at Falmer on the subject of electron microscopy always had the promise of being an interesting event. Now it is even more so! For reasons outside our control, the published speaker is now unable to attend. Dame Zaha Hadid - Architect who first imagined, then proved, that space could work in radical new ways

Architect Dame Zaha Hadid, whose designs include the London Olympic Aquatic Centre, has died aged 65. Iraqi-born, this year she was the first woman to receive the Royal Institute of British Architects (Riba) Gold Medal in recognition of her work. She died following a heart attack on Thursday in a Miami hospital, where she was being treated for bronchitis. Present Around The World – SoCal 2016 Edition

At the end of March the Southern California Local Network held our third annual heat for the Present Around The World Competition. The PATW is based around the premise that an engineer can have the greatest idea, but if you can’t explain it to people no one will know about it, so the competition aims to help young professionals improve their presentation skills and rewards competitors based both on technical content and how they present it. This year’s PATW had some excellent talks making it difficult for the judges to choose a winner and runner up. Nearly every element of our modern lives is a result of the work done by some engineer: running water, electricity, and the internet, as well as our buildings, cars, phones, computers, televisions — even our dating apps. Humanity's engineering feats are pretty astounding when you take a minute to think about them, and as February 21 to 27 is National Engineer's Week , it's a good time to ponder these wonders. Sadly, though, engineering has historically been an inhospitable profession for women.
