  • [USM IET OC]: 191020 Faraday Challenge 2018: Coding the future

    IET-USM OC has carried out the Faraday Challenge on the 20th of October 2018. Our theme for this year was – Coding the Future. The purpose of this event is to instil interest of STEM related fields among high school students in addition to their daily learning in schools. The event was endorsed by the Education Department of Penang State and had managed to attract 52 students, separated into 9 groups, from all over Penang.  The event was kicked off with welcoming remarks by Mr. Cheng Wei Han, President of IET-USM OC. In our version of Faraday Challenge, each team was given a BBC micro:bit to code for any real-time applications. In addition, we also provided every team with an equal number of virtual coins (Faraday Points) which could be used to exchange additional equipment or devices to develop…

  • [UTAR IET OC]: 190311 STEM Workshop - SMK Seri Kembangan

    UTAR IET On-Campus has organized STEM workshop at SMK Seri Kembangan for secondary students.  Students were briefed about the 3D Design Software and 3D Printing technology by our team. On the 3D design, we introduced solidworks software to students.  After introduction, we allow students to play around with solidworks with some basic function to design things such as tower, bottle and robot. Students took the opportunity to design their own product by using solidworks. As part of our workshop, we also covered on 3D printing and the processes.

  • [Uniten IET OC]: 190724 MRT Site Visit on SSP Line

    On 24th of July 2019, IET Uniten on Campus had organized a technical site visit to MRT Bandar Malaysia North Station, one of the stations under MRT line 2 which is still in construction progress.  On the event day itself, 30 participants showed up and 4 committee’s members oversaw this event with our club advisor, Ms. Lee Hui Jing accompanied. We departed from Uniten around 9.15a.m. and reached there by 10.00a.m. Then, our main speaker of the day, Ir. Mr. Ridzuan Abdul Wahab from the MRT corp shared about this MRT line 2 project with us.

  • Knostrop Sludge Treatment Facility Tour - 10th September 2019

    The new sludge treatment facility at Yorkshire Waters Knostrop site in Leeds provides sustainable and efficient processing of up to 48,000 tonnes per year of dry sludge, which is a product of the waste water treatment process. This £72M scheme was promoted to allow the existing sludge incinerator built in 1993 to be decommissioned and to provide a sludge product suitable for use in agriculture whilst generating renewable electricity using biogas which is a product of the new digestion process. Previously most of the waste was incinerated or sent to landfill. Paul Brown (Arup technical consultant) and Daniel Stevenson (Black and Veatch design and construction) gave a short presentation and then a tour of the new sludge treatment facility.   • Interested In The History Of Electric Clocks? There's A Group For That...

    Interested in the history of electric timekeeping? The Electrical Horology Group could be the place for you: part of the Antiquarian Horological Society, the group hosts resources on the history of electric clocks and organises events.  The next meeting of the group, on 16 November, will include a visit to the Shellmex clock by Gillett & Johnston at 80 Strand, London. The Archives also holds collections on the history of electric clocks - the above image is taken from an advertising pamphlet for the Synchronome Company, founded by Frank Hope-Jones. The IET has an original Synchronome master clock, and the clock face in the Kelvin Lecture Theatre is a Synchronome, although it is no longer connected to the original system,

    For those interested in the rich history of electrical time-keeping, why not join the Electrical Horology Group , part of the Antiquarian Horological Society? Their next meeting is on 16 November, and includes a visit to the  Shellmex clock by Gillett & Johnston at 80 Strand, London. For more information, including timelines on this history of electrical horology, visit the Electrical Horology Grou p website. We also hold a collection of pamphlets in the IET Archives on the history of electric clocks, heavily featuring the Sychronome Company. The clock in the IET's Kelvin Lecture Theatre is a Synchronome clock, and the original master clock is held in the Archives.

  • IET Young Professionals Coventry And Warwickshire Welcome Event 2019

    On Wednesday 9th October 2019, the IET Young Professionals for Coventry and Warwickshire hosted their annual Welcome Event at Coventry University’s Faculty of Engineering, Environment and Computing.The Welcome Event has been set up to introduce students to the IET, as well as providing the opportunity for them to get to know each other and network in a hands-on environment. The event itself was formed of three parts: An icebreaker where attendees got to know each other. Each attendee put one shoe in the middle of the room, take a random shoe from the pile, find its owner and then play a game of “Who am I?” The Main Activities, of which there were two.     "I saw this thing on Pinterest/YouTube/Facebook..." (delete as appropriate) roughly translates to my partner as "I've seen a wacky project and I want to give it a go...." He sidles off to hide his expensive professional tools, while I go in search of my screwdriver... So.... I saw this thing on YouTube the other day about making an artificial daylight light-box from an old broken TV screen, and after having a bit of a chat about it on our Forum, I decided that I definitely wanted to give it a go!   • Patryk Wilk Received The 2019 IET Buckinghamshire Local Network Student Prize

    Patryk Wilk, a graduate of Buckinghamshire New University, has been awarded the 2019 IET Buckinghamshire Local Network Student PrizePatryk received his prize of £250 immediately after the 3rd September ceremony where he received his degree.  Andrew Dodd of the IET Buckinghamshire Local Network Committee handed over the cheque and a certificate summarising the reason for giving the prize to Patryk.  Patryk received the prize on the recommendations from his tutors, including Senior Lecturer Rafid Al-Khannak.  Patryk had an excellent and consistently high standard of work throughout his studies and academic performance on his course “BSc (Hons) Computing and Web Development”, including his outstanding Project.  He applied sound project management and technical skills to devise and deliver an effective…

    Amazing experience to see the layers of Heat Exchange section and visited the operations at different levels under the ground level!It requires about 12 people to operate a plant that supply in excess of 626 MWth (1.8 million lbs/hr) of steam! A possibility to make it a business case to extend the application to housing energy supply without compromising our care for the environment.     The IET Standards team are looking at a proposal for a Guide to Earthing and Bonding of 25kV Electrified Railways and are looking for comments.   The Scope of 25kV Railway Earthing and Bonding Requirements This guide aims to assist train operators, railway designers and installation contractors in adopting a harmonised approach towards E&B design philosophy for 25kV railway infrastructure. This will be in line with implementing a common earth system formed by bonding lineside assets and structures to the traction return system, effectively forming a low impedance meshed earth network. The guide will therefore undertake to explain the principles of a common earth system (traction and non-traction) which is able to provide a robust and low impedance path to earth.     Conference on the history of women in engineering. 2019 marks the centenary of the Women’s Engineering Society (WES). The Society was founded to support women engineers who, although welcomed into the profession during World War One, were often told “not to get comfortable” and came under pressure at the end of the war to leave the workforce to release jobs for men returning from the forces. The Women’s Engineering Society sought to resist this pressure, but also to promote engineering as a rewarding job for women as well as men. The STICK conference seeks to celebrate 100 years of WES and women in engineering.
