    Synopsis of Workshop: Data visualization using graphics and plots at the beginning stage of analytics can help researchers to observe the pattern of data distribution and hence suggest the possible analytic strategies. In fact, there are a few guidelines that can be followed to produce a good graph which is capable to convey the message effectively. At the end of the day, audience will be able to choose and plot the right graph by looking at the size, properties and the types of data.

    Synopsis of Workshop: Experimental design is a process of planning a test, which collects the right amount and types of data to answer a question of interest. In engineering, experimental design is useful for analyzing failure, tuning design parameters, optimizing system performance, validating system design etc. This sharing aims to provide audience the basic principles of experimental design and step-by-step procedures to obtain more statistically results from experiments and hence improve the quality of the work.     In   order to strengthen the bond of committees of USM OC, the members had a bonding day on 28 Nov where we gathered to have a workshop “ How to Write Courteously ”, conducted by Dr. Goh Hui Weng  from 2.00 pm - 4.30 pm . Dr. Goh is a certified trainer by HRDF Malaysia & Singapore Workforce Skills Qualifications and indeed we have a very fruitful workshop. After the workshop, all of the members had a wonderful barbecue session together. We believe we are now able to work even well together to make USM OC better in future. Synopsis of Workshop: Writing is one of the most important skill in our learning journey. It helps us to convey our idea and deal or interact with people more effectively.   • [IET-USM OC]:181019 Twinning Program with UNITEN OC

    IET-USM OC did a collaboration with UNITEN OC during the Faraday Challenge organized on the 20th Oct where their volunteers came over to give their support and assistance to make that event a success. The committees from both sides bonded really well together and we had exchanged ideas about IET. Other than that, we also have a great badminton session.     IET-USM OC had traveled to three schools in Penang (Jit Sin High School, Chung Ling Butterworth High School & Heng Ee High School)  on  17 Oct  to introduce to the students on the upcoming IET Faraday Challenge that is happening on 20 Oct at USM Engineering Campus.     I had a wonder meeting with our YPCC Committee in London last December 2018, it was a very engaged and effective meeting with volunteers around the world. we started our meeting with a sweet and short team building led by Imran, follow by a list of agendas to complete. We had a great discussion on the like The Future of Membership, The Future of PEI and The Future of EC. I am enjoyed the brainstorming idea and providing our opinions for respective topics. At the second day, I had presented our Asia Pacific updates on the CC Market Stalls. The concept is each CC-YP Reps prepared their updates on a A2 paper.     IET-USM OC has carried out the Faraday Challenge on the 20th of October 2018 . Our theme for this year was – Coding the Future. The purpose of this event is to instil interest of STEM related fields among high school students in addition to their daily learning in schools. The event was endorsed by the Education Department of Penang State and had managed to attract 52 students, separated into 9 groups, from all over Penang. The event was kicked off with welcoming remarks by Mr. Cheng Wei Han, President of IET-USM OC. In our version of Faraday Challenge, each team was given a BBC micro:bit to code for any real-time applications.   • “Being An Engineering Technician Helped In My Job Interview”

    Earlier this year manufacturing engineer Frida Nzaba moved into a role at Rolls-Royce repairing jet engines – and she’s convinced that being an Engineering Technician (EngTech) helped her to get the job.Frida is now a Repair Capability Manufacturing Engineer at Rolls-Royce Engine Overhaul Services, based in Derby. Her working day is spent developing and implementing ways to repair jet engine components. “The main thing I enjoy is the fact that I can go into work and see various jet engines being stripped and assembled ready to dispatch to the customer; this is just mind blowing,” she says.     We’re delighted that several of our Fellows and Members have been recognised in the 2019 Queen’s New Year Honours listing. Michelle Richmond FIET, Professor Hugh Griffiths FIET, Juergen Maier FIET, David Hughes FIET and Roger Medwell MIET were among those to receive honours. Michelle Richmond Michelle, our Director of Membership and Professional Development, has received an MBE for her work as an ambassador for women in engineering, for spearheading initiatives encouraging young people into STEM careers and for setting engineering standards. A 1990 winner of our Young Woman Engineer of the Year Award, Michelle started working for the IET in 2006.
