  • Midlands Power Group Event - Cryogenic Energy Storage Technology & Policy Innovation

    2018 got off to a flying start for IET Midlands Power Group when over 50 delegates attended an informative talk given by Dr Jonathan Radcliffe on the subject of Cryogenic Energy Storage.  Dr Radcliffe, a Senior Research Fellow at Birmingham University, outlined how the work being done at the university is contributing to the Birmingham:Energy Capital initiative and addressing the challenges of decarbonisation of heat and securing future electricity supply against a backdrop of reducing load factor generating plant (arising from the increasing contribution of renewables) and increasing demand (arising from policies to decarbonise transport).     The IET Technical on Technologies Shaping the Business in Critical Communications  was organsied on Saturday 13th January 2018 at Vistana Hotel Penang. More than 20 participants attended the talk. Present was the IET Penang Representative Tan Soon Keong.   • Industry 4.0 Forum

    The Institute of Engineering and Technology, Malaysia Local Network (IET) has successfully organised the Industry 4.0 forum with Tunku Abdul Rahman University College (Kuala Lumpur)  on industrial innovation, attracting more than 200 delegates from industrial, research and academic. The forum is organized by the Faculty of Engineering and co-organised by the The Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM), the The Institute of Engineering and Technology, Malaysia Local Network (IET), the The Institute of Mechanical Engineering (IMechE), Malaysian Service Providers Confederation (MSPC) and the Malaysian Board of Technologists.     TRIZ - IET Malaysia Network event Assoc. Prof. Dr. Yip Mum Wai conducted a talk on Solving Engineering Problem by Systematic Innovation Approach of TRIZ on Saturday 4th November 2017. He indicated that problem solving is an important skill much needed in the knowledge based economy. With competition becoming increasingly intense, problem solving is no longer a “nice-to-have” skill but a “must-have”.   • End Of Year Chairman's Reception

    On 14 th December, 2017 the IET Victoria Committee and the Young Professional (YP) Committee hosted the Annual Chairman Reception at the Metropolitan Hotel in Melbourne. The event welcomed professionals from all ranges of industries, students, as well as committee members from Engineers Australia and representatives of EECON and members of the IET. This was an occasion to reflect over the year in review for the IET Victoria Committee as well as to network amid experienced and young professional before the conclusion of 2017.   • Satellite Swarms & Mega-Constellations For Global Connectivity (IET Beds & Herts Local Network).

    In line with the theme of field based technologies I took opportunity to see how satellite developments are expected to meet consumer demands by attending a lecture on Satellite Swarms - The Launch of Satellite Mega-Constellations for Global Connectivity by Jonathan Higgins, Director, BeaconSeek Ltd.   A while back, I researched the QoS mechanisms required to provide Wireless VoIP for residential use over a carrier grade network - at the time modelling payloads using the DECT frequency range. Since then, we have seen carrier grade providers create simpler home based TCP/IP apps that allow you to use their carrier grade services on your phone.     The Consumer Electronics Show (CES) took place in Las Vegas this week with the usual offering of brilliant, gimmicky and downright crazy gadgets on display.   The conference wasn’t an entirely successful one this year – rare rainfall caused black outs and there were a few tech fails including the LG robot failing to respond to the CEO’s demands but as usual there were some entertaining IoT products to come out of the event.   Samsung announced that it was introducing SmartThings – a central hub for all of its various IOT products Velco’s Wink Bar, a smart handle bar for bikes won the 2018 Showstoppers Prize   Intel demonstrated their drone light show above the Las Vegas skyline – something which they believe could take over from traditional fireworks     What IoT gadgets from CES caught your…

    You can now submit your 2017 CPD record via Career Manager !   During the review year of 2018 we will be reviewing a sample of members’ CPD activities which took place in 2017.   If selected, we will notify you and request your records (If you’ve already sent us your records, of course, we will just let you know that are reviewing them).   We will then carry out the review and send you our comments.   Once your record has been submitted you will have access to our CPD “dashboard” - even if you are not selected for review. The dashboard is a series of graphs allowing to see how your CPD statistics compare with those of your peers. This is a “live” service and so will change as more CPD records are added to the system.   We hope you will continue to record your CPD using Career Manager during

    I did a series of lectures on Climate Change, ending at the University of Auckland in New Zealand where a group of eager young students quizzed me on many aspects of environmental management. Though NZ contributes little to greenhouse gas emissions, the attendees were passionate about the climate and maknind's impact upon it.     In 2012, I had the opportunity to research emerging strategic changes within the Chip Industry. At the time, ARM was the new entrant gaining mass adoption based off their chipset design - which compared to Intel was better at energy saving during operational tasks, where, Intel remained strong in its ability to provide solid computing power.  Since then, there have been many new Chip Set entrants into the market that have used  economies of scale to provide both, low power consumption rate and strong computing power.  As we move into the world of SMART devices, the interactions between chipset and its OS’s will be effected and so it is of no surprise that security was seen less of a priority than chipset performance i.e. moores law.     The 10th Public seminar on Project Management Practices in the Caribbean '  held on December 09, 2017 at UWI, St. Augustine, Trinidad and Tobago was a huge success!!! There were approximately over 130 persons in attendance.  The event was well organized and the presentations were top class. The IET TTLN wishes to thank Prof. Kit Fai Pun of UWI for organising such an excellent  event.
