    ...firstly many thanks to Fabrizio, Marie for welcoming us to the ZH FabLab - we got a great impression of the facilities and we could take-away many creative ideas :-) Thanks also to all the participants who turned out on this hot, sweltering evening - it was nice to see some old and new faces - some young as well... The event started with Fabrizio giving us a short presentation of the FabLab before then giving us a guided tour of the Fablab itself.  Fabrizio began with their prized "Laser Cutter", which we quickly discovered was his favourite (as for many other FabLab'ers).  He explained that although the lab had many other delights, this was usually the most heavily utilised, because of it's speed and versatility.  We quickly saw why - the intricate (3D) objects we held in our hands, which…

    For several years, the MMC has augmented the academic papers in the IBC Conference ‘Best of’ publication, with a selection of accompanying material from Electronics Letters. This year, the ‘Best of’ publication has become a full Journal, and so the MMC is making the selection available here.    IBC covers all aspects of multimedia, video, audio, radio, and related communications.   • 2017 Americas PATW Venue - Wildlife

    There is a warning sign for wildlife at the resort. There was a discussion if there are alligators and snakes in the pond at the resort. Plenty of baby lizards were running along all pathways for sure! Can you spot the warning sign for wild life in the picture? (It is located in front of the pond near the middle) I was lucky to spot a swimming baby alligator later. Children rushed to the spot when they saw me video-tapping the alligator!

    IET Toronto LN supports interests in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). We have access to kits that can be used at fairs, schools and careers events. These kits covered all age groups, from flashlight kits for the younger children to MicroBits for the youth. We nuture Engineers for tomorrow. You will find fun if you like to play with technology. It will be a fun event for families as well. You will spend quality time with your children while working with the kit.     The IET Americas PATW 2017 competetion was held at Disneyland, Orlando. Contestants (from left to right) are Gideon Mentie; Sayana Saithu; Vanessa Di Battista; Karan Sharma; Macy Kuang (Toronto LN); Seles Bhola; Jane Xiang; Rohullah Latif.  Congratulations to Rohullah Latif (Southern California LN) with his presentation “Regenerative Medicine: Restoring Hope”; and runner-up Vanessa Di Battista with her presentstion “Geosynthetics and Antarctica: Applications and Performance of Geosynthetic Technologies in Antarctica Soil Remediation”. Rohullah Latif will attend the PATW final in UK in November. Americas have been winner of PATW final in UK for the past two years. Hooray! Keep it!

  • The AP Communities Volunteers Conference - Thoughts From The Chair Of CCAP

    On the weekend of the 19/20 August, CCAP held a Communities Volunteer Conference (CVC) in Auckland, New Zealand.  For those who were there - thank you very much for your attendance.  I really appreciate you giving up your weekend, and I hope you found it useful.   For those who weren't there, unfortunately we were limited on the numbers we could invite, but each Local Network (LN) should have had at least one attendee, and they will be talking to rest of the committee about what they learned over the weekend.  To help them do this, I created a PDF of my slides on CCAP and the CCAP Strategy, and have attached them to this blog post - there's nothing secret in there!  If you're interested in what I talked about, then please take a look  .   • WA Shines at Asia Pacific!

    Rovik Olsen from the Western Australia Young Professionals committee has taken home the grand prize on 19 August 2017 (Saturday) when he was crowned the  CHAMPION  of Present Around The World Asia Pacific Final. Rovik will be representing the Asia Pacific region at the grand final in London this year. Rovik is currently a fourth year student at the Edith Cowan University (ECU) here in Perth.   • NorCal Attends The Americas CVC

    This past weekend, Allan Casey, John Manville and Sonia Travaglini of the IET NorCal committee attended the Americas Community Volunteers Conference (CVC) in Orlando, Florida. This event is held every two to three years and brings all of the Local Networks (LNs) together to learn what has happened in each of the areas and to hear about each other’s plans for the future. The specific goals of the meeting are to: 1. To inspire: provide an interactive platform for members to become more engaged with the IET 2. To inform: educate on new tools, best practice, latest developments and successes 3.     Last week we met  Ghazel , Chairperson and founder of UWA IET On Campus. This week I'd like to introduce  Winnie Lee , someone most of you have never heard of. She works for the IET and is the Community Manager for our sector. Always engaging, always gung-ho, she inspires our marketing team to greater heights and promotes the WA network to the wider IET community. Winnie, despite being employed by the IET, studied Psychology and Counselling. She likes the nature of her job as it allows her to meet people from all over the region and beyond, enjoy their different cultures. Let's get to know Winnie. Dogs or cats (or Ducks?   • Cyber Security: Hollywood vs Real Life

    I found this interesting article about the few times when film and TV has gotten hacking right. As the article explains, most of the time, realistic cybersecurity and hacking aren’t visually very exciting subjects, meaning they tend to change it to amp up the drama The NCIS and CSI franchises get it hilariously wrong and as the article points out, films like War Game and shows like Mr Robot have got it right. http://www.darkreading.com/attacks-breaches/6-times-hollywood-got-security-right/d/d-id/1328696     What films and TV have got it right and which are getting it oh-so wrong?
