  • Present Around The World Australia Final 2017

Clash of the giants! It was definitely the clash of the giants at the Australia for the Present Around The World (PATW) Australia Final! 6 champions who won the PATW in their local network were representing their networks in the Australia Final. I had the opportunity to watch these champions present their research finding and to keep myself updated with the latest happenings around the engineering community. The topics presented ranged from recycled polymers in the civil engineering field to groundbreaking researches in the biomedical engineering field to better mankind. We were all invited to a formal dinner on Friday evening after the competition. Apart from the delicious three course meals on the top floor of the hotel, the spectacular Brisbane city view illuminated with colourful lights…

  • 1 Day Leadership Program

From the perspective of the volunteer who helped make this event a reality! My name is Julian Goh and I am a recent chemical engineering graduate from Curtin University. Despite going through four years of university and hearing about the IET, it was only a month ago when I attended my first IET WA YP committee meeting in April. From there I volunteered to undergo a trial by fire which was to organise a day of Lifeskills workshops designed to engage and provide values to unsuccessful Leadership Program 2017 candidates. At the end of the meeting, I was given a succinct summary from Peta Blight of the rough steps I had to take to get everything together and from that point onwards it was up to me to make it happen. A challenge arose in the final week when there were less than 3 sign ups. I decided…

  • Leadership Program 2017 Workshop #2

This workshop focussed on project management and how to effectively collaborate with team members. It was presented by Rob Moore who was an engaging and experienced presenter who could relate his material to real-world examples. I had no knowledge of the programs Slack or Trello prior to this workshop but have now learnt that they are very useful tools when trying to manage people in group projects!   We were seated in groups that we later found would be our groups for the IET projects and events, these being the IET Quiz Night, Present Around the World (PATW), World Record Breaker and the Can Structure challenge. Groups were organised based on our Myer-Briggs results and mixed a range of different personality types. This will no doubt be an opportunity to put into action what we all learnt…

  • Australia New Zealand (ANZ) Young Professionals Campaign (YPC) Workshop

How often do we get a sneaky short getaway from our busy schedules? Thanks to the IET I had the privilege and experience of meeting other like-minded volunteers from across Australia and New Zealand in Brisbane, a city which I had yet to set foot in.  Brisbane is charming and we were lucky to be situated on the picturesque South Bank river front.  On occasion I pondered why I was stuck in the conference room when I could see the amazing day it was outside.  I attended the ANZ YPC workshop where I had the joy to reconnect with familiar faces and meet new ones. In the conference, we exchanged ideas and shared our best practices allowing all the Local Networks to further develop the plan for their LN and the YPC objectives. Everyone present was motivated and passionate. On Saturday, we all met…

  • Augmented and Virtual Reality technologies in industry

The West Yorkshire region recently held an event at the Rose Bowl in Leeds on the subject of augmented and virtual reality technologies in industry.  The event, which highlighted the use of Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) technologies in industry, attracted interested members of the public, IET colleagues, and professional engineers from companies such as BAE Systems, NG Bailey, and global design firm, Arup.  Leeds Beckett University CCTE Senior Lecturer, Balbir Singh gave an exciting presentation describing a work in progress - an ongoing project that makes use of both AR and VR technologies in the construction industry. Together with contributions from developer (and former LBU student) James Fenwick, Balbir also discussed some of his successful knowledge transfer partnerships…

Over the coming months, we hope to help promote events from other organisations that IET members may find of interest.   What is the 4th Industrial Revolution Challenge? The 4th Industrial Revolution Challenge is an annual series of ten headline debates on how the following sectors: health, finance, energy, transport, government and society and food will be disrupted by accelerations in the following platform technologies: IoT, Analytics / AI, 3D printing, robotics, materials, VR, genomics, quantum computing etc. Each year Connect invites Northern Ireland’s top academic research professors, most innovative corporations and leaders from our startup community to nominate the Connect Shapers; people who have demonstrated brilliance in their field and a restless curiosity to find answers to the…

  • STEM In Primary Schools - St. Mary's And Stranmillis University Colleges

In February 2017, Primary 7 classes from six primary schools in Belfast and Bangor participated in events hosted by St Mary’s and Stranmillis university colleges which included “Strictly Come Dancing with Robots”and “Game of Drones”. In the second of the two-day events, held as part of the STEM in Primary Schools research project, over one hundred and sixty Primary 7 pupils completed a series of STEM open-ended problem-solving challenges, which included programming the drones to complete coordinated aerial acrobatics.   These events were influenced by the results of research conducted last year as a joint venture between St Mary’s and Stranmillis. The aim of the research was to ascertain if engaging in “hands-on” practical activities could assist pupils better to understand elements of mathematics…

  • NCSC Glossary Infographic

I found the below infographic on the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) website and I wanted to share it. There are a lot of terms talked about when discussing cyber security and the below is a really useful explanation of some of them; I highly recommend sharing them with those you think would benefit:

  • Midlands Power Group Event - Changing The Counterfactual

On the 16th May, delegates at the Midlands Power Group evening lecture were invited to consider what "changing the counterfactual" means in the U.K. energy scene. Matthew Knight, Director of Energy Strategy and Government Affairs with Siemens, presented his view of this rather unusual topic.    In a far ranging talk, Matthew looked at the factors that have influenced the power industry of today and gave us a perspective on how the consumers' behaviours are increasingly influencing the future shape of the sector. The rapid growth in domestic solar power and electric vehicles are both symptomatic of the rapidly changing environment in which the end user is the counterfactual to the long held assumption that government and big business determine the shape of the power sector.    Delegates were…
