ARE CENG AND IENG EQUAL IN STATUS

Can we say that the CEng and IEng be considered equal titles in professional status or IEng is inferior than CEng.

As the Application Form for both CEng and IEng is same.
  • I THINK THAT THE IET AND OTHER UK PEIs SHOULD RESTRICT THEIR MEMBERSHIPS AND REGISTRATIONS WITHIN THE UK BECAUSE AS LOCAL MEMBERS ARE NOT SATISFIED THEN HOW CAN OVERSEAS MEMBERS BE SATISFIED. I AM AN OVERSEAS MEMBER, I M NOT SATISFIED AND IET DO NOT BOTHER. I DONT KNOW WHAT ARE THE REAL OBJECTIVES OF THE IET AND WHAT DO THE IET WANT INTERNATIONALLY.
  • LAST SURVEY WAS BASED ON 5% RESPONSE OUT OF ALL IET MEMBERS, HENCE NOT TRUE INTERPRETATION. PLEASE NOTE THAT SAID SURVEY IS NOT BASED ON SAMPLING METHODOLOGY.

IET DO NOT FACILITATE EQUALLY AND EQUITY TO EVERY LOCAL NETWORK THROUGHOUT THE WORLD.

Nouman, I think it depends on county.

In the past if one was IEng or CEng then they could apply to City and Guilds for Diploma/Sr award of GCGI and MCGI in Engineering.

In USA GCGI is evaluated by NACES member services to BScEng or BEng and MCGI as MEng or MScEng degree from US accredited University.

In USA if you hold foreign qualifications and apply for employment especially with government then NACES report evaluation (Similar to NARIC UK) is required. My MCGI in Engineering adds additional value as it comparable to MEng degree here in the US.

The recognition of C&G Diplomas varies based on a country and as of 2013 the rout to GCGI, MSCGI changed.

I also seen a few states in US that accept CEng and wave the requirement for writing FE/EIT exam when one is applying for PE license.

"As the saying goes, the future is in your hands.  It is through our active members around the world that the IET has an active presence globally."

  • I HAVE VOLUNTEER ROLE OF SECRETARY IET ISLAMABAD NETWORK. HERE BESIDES CPD, POTENTIAL MEMBERS OF IET ASK THAT WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF IET MEMBERSHIP IN TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT AND FURTHER HIGHER EDUCATION. HERE PEC HOLDS THE MARKET AND PEC RECOGNISES ONLY THAT CENG WHICH IS ACQUIRED THROUGH STUDYING ENGINEERING DEGREE AT UK. PEC DO NOT RECOGNIZE THE IENG AND MIET AND ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY DEGREE. I REQUESTED THE IET SEVERAL TIMES BUT IET DO NOT TAKE INTEREST TO GET RECOGNISE ITS MEMBERS IN PAKISTAN. IET ALSO DO NOT TAKE INTEREST IN PROGRESSION OF LOCAL NETWORKS AT PAKISTAN BY SAYING THAT IET HAS STRATEGICALLY PLANNED TO INVEST IN CHINA AND INDIA. LAST TIME OUR FIRST EVENT COULD NOT COMMENCED DUE TO THE LACK OF IET INTEREST THAT IS THE IET COULD NOT MAKE THE PAYMENT TO HOTEL IN TIME. NOBODY TOOK RESPONSIBILITY. ALL MEMBERS AND POTENTIAL MEMBERS HAD BEEN DISAPPOINTED. NOBODY IS NOW CINVINCED TO GET IET MEMBERSHIP. ITS A HEN OR EGG SITUATION IN PAKISTAN.

    Nouman,

We have to understand that many local in our country licensed or educated Engineers see UK as destination for what they call credential tourism.

Because as our fellow Georgios comments EngC has a more flexible rout to IEng, CEng based on competencies as well as education, and I been criticized harshly for that here in the US. Some accused me on boards that by being CEng in USA I some how bypassed the local PE licensing etc, etc.

They failed to understand that I was in the UK system before I got to US that I was employed in a World wide Engineering and Professional services with projects in EU, APAC , Ireland, Israel etc, and that IEng, CEng are not a license to practice but a qualification brand and a benchmark

So local Engineers be it in US, Canada or Pakistan see the UK rout as a bypassing the local standards.  We have to respect the local our countries standards. And politics.

We can try to intellectually show that these benchmarks deserve recognition, but we can't impose that or contradict our countries standards.

So I let the employers and on different social media channels, such as Linked In to access the links to EngC what IEng and CEng are.

link to You tube at times to a short promo video etc.

My Nationally Accredited Engineering Technology degree came under scrutiny to. Until a DEAC NA university in USA earned ABET accreditation. This helps to show the value of DEAC accredited degrees that they can also be ABET accredited.

So don't be troubled, there is value in IEng even if its up hill fight, Its a respected and valued qualification of an Engineer.

I also have friends who went and earned their standard of their country degree to make sure they have the full recognition for their profession in their country.

What is the latest news about establishing Pakistani Technology Council?

From what I read B.Tech graduates have been deprived of access to higher studies, job opportunities in public departments and promotions due to undefined status of their degree and it was their longstanding demand to establish PTC.

All B.Tech Graduates want no more interference of PEC in PTC and according to HEC notification that Degree of B.Tech (Hons) is not similar to BE/BSc Engg and both streams be considered as two distinct disciplines of knowledge and should run parallel to each other.

In Pakistan the B.Tech holders study the same courses BsEng engineers and are equally competent but they have to struggle and file cases individually to recognize their degree status.

Thank you very much for taking interest in the Engineering Technology Degree in Pakistan.

Unfortunately the Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC) do not ever ready to accept the Engineering Technology Degree Grads as equivalent to Engineering Degree Grads both in education and employment sectors.  PEC was initially under administrative control of Ministry of Water and Power but now it is under administrative control of Ministry of Science and Technology.  PEC is under functionally contorl of Higher Education Commission (HEC).  The role of PEC is to accredit the Engineering Degrees, register the Engineering Graduates and regulate the Engineering Profession whilst the role of the HEC is regulate the over all higher education in Pakistan and all the professional councils including PEC works under the umbrella of the HEC.  The HEC has the authority to give equivalency decisions of degrees.  The PEC had not only biased the HEC but also the Universities for admission in MS Engineering, Public Departments for recruitment on equal pay scales and promotions, Private Contrators for recruitment on equal positions etc. against the Pakistani Engineering Technology Degree Graduates.  The PEC had also been misguided the IEA Washington Accord that the PEC equally treats both Engineering and Engineering Technology professions.

The B.Tech Pass and B.Tech Hons Degrees were launched in Pakistan on the same lines as in India.  At that time, both in India and Pakistan, both B.Sc Engineering and B.Tech Hons Degrees were declared equivalent degrees but right after few years,  Pakistan i.e. PEC had refused to accept the equivalency.  On the other hand, India is still recognizing its B.Tech Hons Degree as equivalent as B.Sc Engineering Degree.  That is why, now most of the B.Tech Hons Degree Graduates in Pakistan are constrained to do their jobs at lower scales, promotions and benefits are blocked,  Universities have refused to give admission in MS Engineering,  M.Tech or MS Technology Programs are not launched by the Universities etc. etc.  All is due to the discriminative behaviour/attitude of the PEC.

Initially, the Engineering Technology Community of Pakistan were demanding from the PEC and HEC equivalent status but due to continuous misbehave of PEC,  the ET Community has demanded their separate professional council (proposed name Pakistan Technology Councill PTC) under the Ministry of Science and Technology (MoST).  but instead of PTC, our separate Accreditation Council named National Technology Council (NTC) has been established and started functioning under the HEC.

Now the NTC is designing the new Service Structure for Engineering Technologist (new Cadre) in Pakistan.  Hoping that soon it will be implemented in all Public and Private Sectors.  The Curricula of All Engineering Technology Degrees are being revised and being implemented in all Public and Private Sector Universities.  NTC is also in continuous discussion with the PEC, MoST, HEC, Employers and Universities for quality education and due rights of ET Graduates of Pakistan.  All the ET Community is expecting a lot from the NTC.

It is worth mentioning here that the Pakistan has realised the profession and cadre of the Engineering Technologist as already implemened at USA, Malaysia, Australia etc.  Both the Engineeirng and Engineering Technology Degrees are four years professional degrees.  one will go to Washington Accord and other to Sydney Accord soon.  The fact is that the ET community has been suffering a lot in Pakistan due to the E community (PEC) un-necessarily and due to fudalism.  PEC has forced all related oraganizations to recruit the Engineers on all kind of Engineering and Technology positions by occupying the majority of positions for Engineering Technologists.  When legally asked to the PEC abou it, PEC always reply in written that it is up to the employers and universities...  isn't a rediculous move???

    Thank you.

The IENG is kind of UK created type of professional in between of Techanican and Engineer.  Previously, the IENG requirements is HNC/HND.  All the engineering degree graduate are able to be Chartered Engineer prior 2004.  As a result to join the EC, UK Engineering degree only 3 years of study and Europe are more than 4 years.  In order to match with EC requirements, UK raised the Chartered Engineer requirement to Master Level, therefore, most of the UK universities are offering 4 years MEng course as an option for student to choose.  Then the 3 years degree engineering graduate cannot directly apply Chartered Engineer and needs to carry out further study to Master level.  Therefore, the engineering degree graduate can only apply for the IENG.  It can be a step stone for CEng if IENG study to Master Level.

Before, the IEE reform to IET, IENG is not Corporate Memeber (Full Member) and no right to vote.  So, IENG was not treated as equal as CEng.  Just after the reform, IET treat IENG and CENG as equal member.  It is the righ way to move, as the 3 years degree is equal to the 3 years degree before 2004.  It was after joining the EC change the requirements.

In some place like Hong Kong, there are some works only be signed off by Registered Professional Engineer, under the Engineers Registration Ordiance and only Chartered Engineer can be registered.  This explained that the IENG and CENG are different.

  • Another difference is that IEng is a grade that is in terminal decline and unlikely to be around in 10 years time.
