ARE CENG AND IENG EQUAL IN STATUS

Can we say that the CEng and IEng be considered equal titles in professional status or IEng is inferior than CEng.

As the Application Form for both CEng and IEng is same.

Nouman,  USA states have different needs so whats good for Hawaii may not be for Texas. Each state creates its own requirements.

In USA its a two step process first he graduate needs to earn EI - Engineer Intern certification. Then after number of years usually 4 as an Engineer supported by licensed PE they can apply for the PE exam.

Its all in the lonks I provided below.  This is for the State of New Mexico.

    • Official transcript(s) (posting the engineering/engineering technology degree(s) earned and received in the board office directly from the school).

    • Engineering Technology programs:

    • Are required to be accredited by the Technical Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology, as per the NM Engineering and Surveying Practice Act 61-23-14. A (2)

    • All graduates from a board-approved, four-year engineering technology program accredited by the Technical Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology are required by law to obtain two years of post-graduate engineering experience. The experience must be substantiated by a licensed professional engineer (one of the required references) in order to obtain Engineer Intern certification.

Neuman there is also a Dublin accord for Engineering Technicians.  In USA its the Associate Degree programme of usually 2 years full time in college education.

I can't say its equal inferiur but it requires different education and training so its different.

It was my understanding, that a 3 year college degree in Technology in the USA is equivalent to the 3 year Technology Diploma in Canada and was classified as an Associate Degree and are recognised by the Sydney Accord.   Correct me if i'm wrong.

Daniel, I'm not an expert, Most associate degrees I've seen are around 60 semester hours in USA while typical bachelors degree is 120 semester hours. The Associate degrees in USA recognized by Dublin accord.  Bachelors degree in Engineering Technology accredited by ABET TAC is recognized by Sydney Accord.

Majority of Community Colleges in USA are a 2 year colleges that allow students to continue in to two final years transfer to university for a 4 year bachelors degree.

I did see some Associate degrees that were above 60 credits.

For example Kent State Associate Degree in Engineering Technology is 70 semester Credit hours.

    provostdata.kent.edu/.../REAASEEETEETG.pdf  - example of 4 semesters (2years) programme.

I think the best approach is comparing the programmes, the classes etc.

So in order to be considered for Technologist in Canada I think a top up classes will be required.

    Moshe,

I believe you just answered my question.  The Engineering Technology degree in USA is classified as a Bachelors Degree (BS/BA) ? and recognised by the Sydney Accord, and in Canada its a Technology Diploma.  The 2 year  Engineering Technician  Diploma programme here is recognised by the Dublin Accord.

The difference between USA and Canada, is the fact that they are DEGREES in USA and DIPLOMAS in Canada.
  • It seems to me that IEng is only very rarely stipulated in  job advertisements and the majority of these are in the field of civil engineering. Perhaps IEng could remain as a lower level qualification in civil engineering and alternative 'practitioner' designations developed for separate fields of engineering technology.
  • CEngs and IEngs are both Engineers and have distinct roles as specified in the EC Standard.

In my opinion we should have many more IEngs than CEngs not only in civil engineering as stated in the previous post but in all disciplines or even cross-disciplines. Depending on the kind of a business we may have even IEngs in higher ranked positions than CEngs.

What we should have done already is to try and raise the profile of all those registered as IEngs. Unfortunately the situation now is that in most cases IEng is used as an interim registration which can lead to CEng registration.

  • BUT THE PROBLEM IS THAT THE EC UK HAS CLASSIFIED THE IENG AND CENG ACCORDING TO THE LEVEL OF QUALIFICATION BUT NOT ACCORDING TO THE TYPE OF THE QUALIFICATION. I DONT KNOW WHO WILL GET CORRECT IT TO EC UK.
  • In actual fact IEng and CEng are not directly linked with qualifications.Registration to these levels can be achieved if you prove that you achieved the competencies included in the standard for each category. Qualifications are relevant but not the deciding factor. The deciding factor is to achieve the relevant competencies.

I am a Professional Registration Advisor and Interviewer for both IEng and CEng. From my long experience I can say that if you do not have the formal academic qualifications you have to prove that you are at that academic level in order to qualify for registration. On the other hand if you have the formal academic qualification but your duties are not at that level it is impossible to be eligible for registration.

  • When one goes into Washington or Sydney accord, academic qualifications matter.
