Introduce yourself

New to the Healthcare Technologies online network? What made you join? How are you involved in the area of Healthcare Technologies? Introduce yourself here!
  • My name is John Jacobs. I'm a retired electronic engineer. I had the privilege of working in the Bioengineering Division of the Clinical Research Centre at Northwick Park Hospital, under the leadership of the late Prof Heinz Wolf. Although my working career led me away from medical work into severe environment electronics, now retired I am a community first responder with the ambulance service (SCAS).

I'm particularly interested in wireless communication in patient monitoring and in better communications for emergency service vehicles
  • Dear John,

Welcome to the Healthcare Technologies Network. I note that among your many interests is patient monitoring. My particular interest is Appropriate Healthcare Technologies (AHT) for low resource settings. We have an excellent archive of videos of the presentations at our recent webinars, some of these concern patient monitors including wearables. These videos can be found at :

Hello everyone! I have newly joined the community and am keen to sharpen my awareness of developments in the healthcare technologies field. I am a Biomedical Engineer currently focused on IVD development. I am particularly interested in the application of machine learning to diagnostics, or for any other healthcare application for that matter. I am a Product Development Engineer at a liquid biopsy company and always looking to broaden my skill set. Any opportunities/courses/events that can be recommended here to help me become a better engineer would be greatly appreciated.

Another health tech sector I'm particularly interested in is tissue engineering and regenerative medicines. I don't work in this field, just find it fascinating! Perhaps I will try to transition into it at some point.
  • Hello Everyone,

I've 40 years' experience in the pharmaceutical industry.  For the first part of my career, I worked in secondary manufacturing (aseptic, liquids, dry products, etc., both human and veterinary) in a variety of roles.

For twenty years until last year, I ran a leading UK training and consultancy business, with a focus on GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) and GDP (Good Distribution Practice).

I am Vice-Chair of the Pharmaceuticals Technical Activities Committee at the IMechE.

My particular interest is in introducing the healthcare industries to best practices from other industries.

  • Hello. I have just joined this community. In addition to being a STEM Ambassador and self confessed geek….  I am also a public elected Governor for the Berkshire Healthcare Foundation Trust, representing West Berkshire. As a retired technology consultant I want to help the Trust with the digital transformation of services. I hope to gain some insights from this community on the technical and engineering developments applied to the healthcare sector.

  • Hi Ray, welcome to the Healthcare Technologies Network. I am also retired from paid employment but still enjoy and participate in engineering activities including webinars which are a great facility especially during the Covid pandemic. My particular interest is healthcare technologies for low resource settings (LMICs). We normally have an international event every 2 years and it is hoped to have the next one in 2022. 20 excellent video recordings of the presentations from the last event AHT2020 made by IET.tv can be found in our network's archives.

  • Hi Robert, welcome to the Healthcare Technologies Network. It's interesting to read about your experience. My current interest is Appropriate Healthcare Technologies for Low Resource Settings (LMICs). The IET normally holds an international event on this topic every 2 years and it's hoped to have the next one in 2022. IET.tv produced 20 excellent videos of last year's event AHT2020 and they can be found at

    Hello everyone,

My name is Jon Selby and I'm a medical device product design engineer.*

I am currently working for Renishaw Neuro Solutions, developing a neurological drug delivery device which facilitates neurologists in delivering accurate doses of pharmaceutical agents to precise targets in the brain.

I am involved and interested in medical device development, risk analysis, usability engineering, creation of instructions for use, development of training programme and the deployment of product to clinical trial sites.

My career started with an apprenticeship at Mira Showers where I received a fantastic foundation in all engineering disciplines including the related business functions. From there I studied mechanical engineering at university. I then returned to Mira Showers and worked on the development of various consumer and healthcare showering products.
I also spent some time working on precision metrology products within Renishaw core business.

    Nice to meet you all!
    Jon

    * This feels like the opening statement for a group therapy session - but I doubt there is a cure for being an engineer!!!

  • Hi Jon, welcome to our network. I enjoyed reading your introduction. My current interests, Appropriate Healthcare Technologies for Low Resource Settings, are somewhat different to yours but,in case you're interested, our network's next big event on this topic is likely to take place in 2022. If you have further interest, a set of 20 excellent short videos prepared by IET.tv of presentations made at our event last year AHT2020 can be found at https://tv.theiet.org/?event=6804

    Very best wishes,
