Well, today is my 1st time to Savoy Place and I must say, I am very impressed. Was not expecting a 'bus station' waiting room but at the same time, was not sure what to expect. Well done IET smiley

  • Glad you like it Jon - it is fantastic isn't it smiley

I would definitely recommend it to those who have never been. The food was excellent. There was a last minute change to the presenter of the IoT talk, however the replacement speaker was extremely knowledgeable, engaging and funny. A very good day.

    Regards,

    Jon
  • Having visited (for an IEng interview) in late 2016, I can see why the IET membership fees are so high.

The presenter at the IoT event was Professor Mischa Dohler .... would highly recommend seeing him speak.

Simon my understanding is that IET Venues  http://www.ietvenues.co.uk/  makes a net contribution.

    Roy,

I can vouch for that. If you try to make a booking through the IET they are a bit reluctant as it provides no income and affects their budget. However once you have a booking the venue staff are superb. I have hosted a couple of meetings there as a committee chairman and attended a number of other committee meetings as a member, and as a venue (at least for smaller meetings of up to a dozen) it is among the best I have experienced.

  • Yes Roy you are correct...

I believe IET Venues (that's Savoy Place, Austin Court in Birmingham, as well as the Teacher Building in Glasgow) make a substantial contribution to the charitable side of the Institution which can all be viewed within our Annual Accounts

  • There was a debate on another thread which was veering over to the old argument of whether IET membership is value for money. And it did make me think that if I had to justify it to myself then, just at the moment, for me personally, somewhere between 25%-50% of the IET membership cost is worth it for the Faraday centre at Savoy Place alone. People have in the past said "it's only for Londoners", so I thought it worth mentioning here that I find it more useful as a non-Londoner who regularly has to visit clients in London. Having free work space available in a central London location which I can use without notice is fantastic.

I'll be perfectly honest and admit that 3-4 years ago I wouldn't have expected to be saying that!

Of course I appreciate that many members don't need those benefits, but as Roy and Lisa say, it doesn't cost us anything. (Ok, I suppose someone could be really pedantic and argue that if the IET also rented out the Faraday Centre at corporate rates they might be able to reduce our membership by a fraction of a smidgeon, but I think several of us would be a bit upset about that!)

    Cheers,

    Andy
