IET Membership Renewal or not

Hi All,

I have been a member of IET for over 15 years now and have earned the title of CEng around 4 years back.

While I was in UK (until 2014), I was quite active in the IET community but in 2014 when I relcoated to UAE, I couldnt find any local network however have always renewed my membership but must admit havent really gained anything from IET membership at all.

I have just moved to Paris for a contract job (until March-19, due to extend further in Dec'18) and I am not sure if I should renew my IET Membership as not sure what benefit I will get out of it.

I have been working on Engineering Design Systems in Oil & Gas industry for last 10 years and cant see how my IET Membership helps in there, in fact even CEng hasnt given me any benefit yet.

Am I missing something?

Appreciate your comments/replies/Suggestions

Thanks

  • I suspect it's all down to whether or not CEng is useful to you.  If you give up your IET membership, then the CEng will also lapse - unless you switch to another institution.

Ultimately, it's just a badge to say "I am a qualified engineer".  It may get you an interview that you wouldn't otherwise have got.  Or it might not.  It's hard to tell.
  • Thanks Simon,

My career has taken me into such a niche role in Oil & Gas industry that CEng is not at all an attraction to the employer.

I wouldnt say world-wide network as have just relocated to France having spent over 4 years in Middle-East, hardly much presence available there.

I am not even sure how in future IET Membership or CEng could help me until I get into Academics.

    Kind Regards

  • Hi Varun Sharma‍

The IET does in fact have a presence in the UAE as part of the PCEUAE group (Professional Chartered Engineers in the United Arab Emirates). PCEUAE is collaborative group sponsored by both the IMechE and the IET and has been in existence for many years now (at least the 15 years I've been at the IET as I used to be their IET Staff Contact many years ago!)  Their activities can be found on their website at https://www.pceuae.com

Now that you are located in France, as my colleague Rob says, there is an IET Local Network in France and their online community can be found here IET France Online

If you join their online community, you can receive email notifications when new events are added into their calendar as well as start and join in with topics in their discussion forum and read their blog posts etc.

    Hope that helps? smiley
  • Hi Lisa,

    Thanks for your reply.

While in UAE, I was part of PCEUAE group, what I can say is that - its better than having nothing.

Yes I am looking forward to France Network but just wondering what I will get renewing the membership.

    Thanks

  • Hello Varun,

I am also an Oil & Gas professional with 12+ years experience & I would recommend you to renew your IET membership & retain CEng status.

There are many Oil & Gas companies that recognize Chartered Engineers as Distinguished Engineers. I am currently working with Bechtel & it recognize there PE/CEng across globe.

In my opinion the benefits of IET membership & CEng status with respect to oil & gas industry are as below :

    1) Provide competitive advantage among other engineers for Senior/Lead positions even if you have less experience.

    2) Recognition for being a member of professional body. It also helps in CPD. Training, seminars, networking across globe.

    3) Some Oil & Gas clients prefer working engineers to be CEng or PE. Chartered status helps in developing trust & clients are more confident.

    4) Mutual International agreement of IET with other professional bodies helps to attain chartered status across globe. If you wish to relocate to country that has tie up with IET & wants to attain Chartered status of that country, I am sure it gonna help. NZ has mutual exemption, Australia, HongKong, Singapore etc. have mutual agreement in Asia Pacific region.

    5) CEng/PE are given consideration over other candidates for PMC roles in Oil & Gas Industry & not to mention exceptional salaries :)

So I would suggest you to search & join EPC/Oil & Gas company that recognize your chartered status.
