Earthing. Historical Requirements.

It is 1958 in England.

1. For what TWO reasons can an earth wire connecting an installation to a water main or water-pipe be made?

2. Who should be notified and approval given by, before an earth connection is made, in a manner approved, to a buried water main or water-pipe. (Clue: It is not the Queen).

Z.
  • 1/ If it is your own or if the owner consents

2/ The water authority - maybe it`s worded something like "The Queens rep........"
  • 1. Presumably both Earthing and Bonding (supplementary) in today's language.

    2. Notice to the water authority would have been required, and the manner of connection must have been approved by the same. I wasn't aware of any necessity to wait for specific approval to be given make a connection however.

       - Andy.
  • Water authority is known as the water Undertaker, and possibly then as now approval would be deemed to be given if no reply is received within a period of time to a request.
  • Ha ha, I thought that this would be difficult for you youngsters! Just a twinkle in the milkman's eye at the time!

Two reasons for an earth wire connection to water pipes (details above)

a,  As a measure of safety for the purposes of returning to the source of supply such leakage current as may flow or result from a failure of insulation.

b, For radio frequency currents and those from radio-interference suppression devices.

An earth connection shall only be made to a  buried water-main or water pipe after notice to, and in a manner approved by, the water authority concerned.

Yes Andy my bad wording. There was no need to wait for an approval from the Water Authority if the work complied with the current requirements of the "Regulations for Controlling the Earthing Installation to Metal Water Pipes and Water-Mains."

Note to readers. We do NOT use any water utility supplier  buried metal pipes as an earth electrode for installations these days it is prohibited.  542.2.6
