This type of incident happens occasionally all over the world. Whilst we all sympathise I'm sure, more relevant is "What legible warning signs were displayed?"

  • This accident sounds a little different to the norm.

It sounds as though a ball had ended up in water, and an attempt was made to retrieve it with a long metal pole. That would be safe if the area was open to foot traffic,AND IF the pole was never raised much above head height. I suspect that the pole was raised towards the vertical and touched an overhead line that was safely out of direct reach.

It would have been safer for a good swimer to swim or wade to retrieve the ball WHILST WEARING A LIFE PRESERVER, Or to use a small boat.

Or simply to abandon the ball, most types are cheap.

The much more common type of accident innvolves climbing poles or pylons, or trespassing into outdoor substations to retrieve balls, kites and other items.

And yes there should be more education about the dangers of carrying or or useing long poles anywhere near overhead lines. Fishing rods are a particular risk.
  • there used to be warnings on TV of such .  a terrible tradgedy
  • I recall some of the rather gruesome public information films shown on TV, and in cinemas and schools. They were in my view a good thing, but would never be allowed today lest any little darlings became distressed.

Also political correctness WRT to race/skin colour would be a minefield.

If the victim was white, the the PC lobby would complain "that is racist and gives the impression that we live in an all white society"

If the victim was black, the PC lobby would complain "that is racist and gives the impression that black kids are more likely to be killed"

Then consider not just race but also "trans issues" and gender identity, and sexism etc.
  • Here is a link to a selection of vintage public safety films. The most relevant is just after 2 minutes in, but they are all worth watching.
    Youtube.

  • You definitely wouldn't have JS in any film nowadays!!!

You must live in a funny old world

  • Actually given some of what is actually broadcast on the channels for minority interest, I bet you could screen just that sort of 'shock tactic' safety film on UK TV without complaints, but there would probably be no management appetite to do so. Like the health and safety monster that has been unleashed, the 'woke' approach means  a lot of otherwise perfectly sensible folk are restricted by limits that are purely self-inflicted, instead of the original intention.

But then as my youngsters keep reminding me, I'm from the last century, and my approach to risk, comedy and politics reflects that and  is correspondingly different to theirs.

  • Sad news. I was in school myself not too long ago and there was definitely information and films about being careful around electricity and I even think there was a scenario presented with a long metal pole. I certainly hope this type of information is still given. We covered it in what was Personal and Social Education I think.

About the public information films. I'm not sure if the comment was intended seriously, but I don't recognise anyone who would prevent or take exception to educational films about the dangers of electricity, irrespective of the skin colour or gender identity of the actors. This is not a minefield at all.
