E3 Competence question for CEng

Hi,

I am close to applying for CEng, but I am struggling for evidence in the E3 competence. Is it only environmental sustainability or does social sustainability count? I ask because I have worked with local schools to raise the profile of engineering, hopefully leading to a few more people going into engineering in future. Would this work come under E3 and count towards it?

Would car sharing to work count or any other activities I undertake to reduce my carbon footprint?

Regards

Nick
  • Hi Nick,

Thank you for your question.  E3 refers specifically to undertaking engineering activities in a sustainable way, so car sharing or similar are not specific.  You can draw examples such as undertaking risk assessments or environmental assessments, even if this is something that you have done at the design or specification stages of a project and also think about how you use resources efficiently and effectively in order to ensure sustainable development.

The Engineering Council (EngC) have also provided additional information on sustainability which might give some ideas of what is meant by sustainability.  You can find this at: http://www.engc.org.uk/about-us/sustainability

Does anyone else have any specific examples they wish to share from their own experiences.  I know from working with candidates that this is often one of the more difficult competences to meet.

  • Hi All,

I believe for engineering design services companies, the engineers practices risk and environmental assessments during Hazard and Operability Studies and Safety Instrumented Functions where safety aspects of a safeguarding and control systems design of a plant are evaluated. Another example I think if you're involved in a project where it follows ISO14001.

  • Hi Brian,

    Thanks for your comments.

In the aircraft industry, any engineering activities designed to improve fuel efficiency may have a positive environmental impact and contribute to sustainable development.

I'm not sure if you are a member of the IET Aerospace network, but they have an event next week on material scarcity which will cover some of these topics in more detail.

I would be interested to see what thoughts other people have in this area.

    Regards,
