Electrocution.

  • Very sad. Not too far from me either. Reading between the journalistic technical nonsense it sounds a like light fitting intended for SELV use has two parts of the exposed frame used as live conductors - the mystery "conversion" to mains voltage was far from "competent" IMO.

If the shock was indeed direct L-N then I doubt the RCD, even if it had been full working, would have offered any protection.

  • Am I alone in thinking that the phrase "electrocuted himself" is somewhat tasteless?
  • I presume it was a lamp similar to this.
  • If so for someone  to have the knowledge to modify it, changing lamp holder to take a mains lamp and bypassing the transformer in the base, without realising that the result was lethal, would be an unusual combination of skills.

It is almost as if it was deliberately intended to be dangerous, which is worrying.

Edit mind you, this exists so perhaps

In any case, for the family, it is tragic.
  • I hope that it wasn't a 12 Volt light fitting that had a B.S. 546 plug attached that was meant for a 12 Volt supply using a mains B.S. 546 2 Amp 3 pin socket originally supplied at 12 Volts, but in this instance was plugged into a mains powered B.S. 546 socket in the caravan.

  • It's seems to have been rewired for 230V by the uninitiated, so bypassing the 12V transformer.

  • Near me too, we must be neighbours AJJ!

Yes very tragic, a real shame.

    Criminal; stupidity

Retired to run directly off the towing vehicle or leisure battery using a 230 volt plug and socket, that sounds plausible, but absolute stupidity with exposed conductors.
