Go on, make a quick decision as to what the earthing arrangement is.

  • The insulation of the overhead supply cables is quite thick, and it is unlikely that the supporting buckle clips were the cause of the clicking on the radio. The clicking was probably caused by switching of lights or heating etc. possibly even loads on timers. Of course there may have been a loose connection at the top of a pole due to corrosion or wind vibration.

Ide say the installation is PME you can clearly see the house green/yellow going into the neutral block. But what I dont understand is why is there an earth wire on the pole? Is it actually a second neutral?  I ask because the house earth is PMEd inside so cant see why you need a pole earth

I looked at it and thought PME then realised the block is not in the neutral and started looking for a earth rod, went back outside to speak to the lines men and realised it is TNS that has a separate earth conductor on the overhead supply.

It is the first time I have seen a three wire over head cable TNS earthed supply run into a domestic property like this.

I doubt you see many poles like this on the streets of London, or Lundain as it says on the road signs in South Wales where this is.
  • Well, maybe earthing in rocky Wales  is harder and maybe less suited to PME. - My daughter is camping near this barn this weekend, and looking at google maps that appears to be supplied by TN-S overhead cables as well.

  • Yes, I believe that I saw TN-S with a separate overhead protective conductor in the rocky Highlands of Scotland some years ago. I posted a question about it on the old forum to clarify things for me. This post seems to confirm my conclusions despite some years passing. A separate earth conductor was run with the L and N overheads.

I said to the customer and the linesmen that a bit back I had seen this sign a few miles away in Porth, the customer laughed and said he worked at the company that supplied the electricity to the council .

There is still a lot of old equipment installed by companies that have long since disappeared still being used as part of the current distribution networks in the UK.
  • Have you tried phoning Porth. 27 Sparking?

    Not any more!

Google passed by in 2010 when there was a box on the gable end below the cables. Some time after 1/9/14 (see the 64-plate vehicle) the cables were still there, but the box had gone, and in the picture with the 15-plate Landrover, the aerial LV supply has gone.

  • Always like a well labelled consumer unit.

We couldn't afford electric heating when I was a girl we were so poor we had to live in a crisp packet on the M4!!

Crisp packets can be quite roomy these days....

I've yet to find one that's filled above the half way mark leaving plenty of room for a family of four.... ?
