Erroneous test

Anyone know what this test is? It is listed in the same column  beside the insulation resistance tests on the installation test record sheet that needs to be completed by registered electrical contractors in Ireland.

It is a check for crossed circuits (one enlivening another)  - and a bit more than simply a borrowed Neutral...

     4/15 - Test 6 - Erroneous connections

The following test shall be carried out in order to detect erroneous connections between circuits: For each circuit, its protective device shall be switched off and an insulation test in accordance with Table 61A applied between phase conductors of that particular circuit and all other phase conductors.

Note 1: This is an additional test to those specified in CENELEC HD 384.6.61:1992 Note 2: All loads in the circuit under test must be disconnected e.g. appliances switched off, lamps removed.

Some years ago on this forum I referred to having completed such a test, as a test to ensure separation of circuits, but I was corrected, as over here testing for separation is taken to mean that you are testing to ensure that a SELV circuit is electrically separated across the transformer.

As a member of RECI I can indeed help you with this.

It is erroneous connections between phase conductors. An insulation test is performed between the outgoing side of the MCB etc. in question to the phase busbar with the MCB for the circuit under test open and all other devices closed. This is repeated for each of these. This is to determine that there are no connections between the phase conductor of the circuit under test to any other circuits circuits in the installation/DB. It is a mandatory test under ET101 (National Rules for Electrical Installations).

If you have access to the RECI Guide on Testing & Verification it shows it very well with pictures and explanation.

So while it might spot the old 'one leg of a ring and the immersion connected to the ring fuse, and the other leg of the ring connected to the immersion fuse', it wouldn't necessarily spot (the more common?) borrowed neutral?
