Noisy builders on existing properties.

I have had immediate neighbours carrying out building work........... an extension etc, this has been going on since April.

I appreciate that most building noise is unavoidable but loud radios and foul language is not acceptable IMO. Even when chastised, they seem to think that it is a right applicable to builders and continue.? I had to resort to loud dB's on Classic FM on a sound blaster for a few days, to get them to desist from their their music at least. Is this an indication of intelligence or upbringing, Do electricians have the same disregard for others?, would you do it? How is it prevented?

  • You have my sympathy Jaymack.

The Local Authority environmental officers are your best course of action. They deal with all kinds of nuisance from neighbours. If the work was subject to planning permission, it is also likely there are some conditions under which it was granted, such as working hours, on street parking and of course noise.

Let us know how you get on,

    regards,
  • Hi Jaymack‍

Is it the actual builder or their subbies? If it's subcontractors then maybe have a word with the builder themselves or just a chat with the homeowner and ask them to have a word.

It's the builders own company I think, I have spoken to the owner and the builders, they all seem to have the same disregard for the environment. Also spoke to the local authority who have sent letters, but they seem to have been convinced that they are not making an unnecessary noise.

I doubt that the local authority personnel are committed to this role, and it is only a means of earning a living to them. They seem to act on the principle, that if they do nothing effectual then the problem will go away ............. eventually..

  • We had the same problem with our neighbours having an extension built where the owners had decamped to the parents house. It was a big problem for my wife who was trying to work in the house from her office. Had I not been out at work I would have done a little music practice with the windows open - the bagpipes don't have a volume control.

Probably just have to put up with it. The local Council can intervene, but it has to be regular and persistent.

My problem is noisy children two doors away. They are, and have been, the only noisy people in the whole block. Fighting a nuisance with another nuisance is not a good solution. I just live for the day when the "For Sale" notice goes up.

For Sale is not the answer either, since it is pot luck who your neighbours are. Noise is noise is noise but what is preventable? There's the rub! The environment needs to be controlled by someone, the local authority is in the best position. What is needed is government legislation.

  • The old bat who lives next to Kelly towers  smokes in her garden and unfortunately if my bathroom window is open my bathroom and hallway stink of her foul smoke now I realise it's not as bad as noise but it's still a pain in the bum and she's a nosy woman as well

The noise has only as much power over you as you choose to give it, it will be over soon and I guarantee that you wont be laying on your death bed thinking about this. Buy some earplugs, chill out and be grateful its only building noise, not missiles landing like some people live under every day.

    All the best

The response I would expect from the subjects in question ........ no regard for the welfare of others, in perpetrating unnecessary environmental pollution including use of foul language..

I'm very considerate of other people, you know nothing about how I conduct myself and my morals or ethics  but I'm aware that the world hasn't got to and generally doesn't live up to my expectations and when this happens, I have a choice how to react because ultimately my happiness depends on my perception of a situation, not their behaviour.

Your resentment to these people is really only hurting you, fine be angry and miserable, its your life but I choose happiness every day. Life is far too short.......

    All the best
