Best Buy Multi Function Tester...?

Hi All,

I'm looking to expand my current electrical/mechanical service role to include inspection and testing, this year I will be sitting the appropriate qualifications.

Bit of an impossible question I suppose but what is the best buy MFT?

Do you need to spend a fortune, are you just paying for a name, do they all do the same thing, any to avoid...??

My current test equipment is all Fluke but there MFTs seem to be more pricey than say Megger or Kewtech?

Any info much appreciated or any links to previous discussions.
  • Both Megger and Fluke are broadly in the price range £500..1000 depending on how many knobs and whistles they come with, and are roughly comparable in price and spec. How much you want to pay for the knobs and whistles depends on what you want it for. At a minimum these days you'll want it to be able to do do the DC testing for A- and preferably B-type RCDs. Automatic testing of the endless permutations for RCDs is a bit of must if you need to test a board full of RCBOs. If you're just doing domestic work then writing the results in a notepad is probably ok; for larger installations you might want something that links to a PC and uploads the data. if you're doing 3-phase work then you might want it do do 3-phase rotation testing. Lots of TT work? Then maybe Ra earth rod testing. Etc.
  • I've been a megger enthusiast for years, having various bits of their kit, but am sorry to say that interest has  gone over the last couple of years. All but one of my megger items has gone defective, with the MFT requiring a new connector block, on one occasion, and a new lead set a short time later. I'll look for a different make next MFT purchase.

  • I have the Martindale ET4000 which I am very happy with. It doesn’t do earth rod testing, although the next model up, the ET4500 does. It will test three phase including phase rotation. It will do type AC, A and F RCDs, but does not currently do a type B.

Indeed, their test terminals seem to be a particular issue on the megger MFTs. The green one (L2/Earth) has gone intermittent on ours, but it always manages to pass calibration. I am considering opening it up and resoldering just prior to the next cal!
