Somebody has a hallway switch downstairs but they want it switched at the top of the landing to.

problem is they don’t want damage done to any of the walls to put in a typical 2 way, does anyone have a clue in what I could do to give them a 2 way switching? Is there a smart bulb or something?
  • Something along the lines of quinetic wireless switches prehaps, many years ago I had the same problem just used a remote control switch back then.

Quinetic have their own switch design but also do a grid switch that'll match an MK grid switch module making a retrofit easier to match. Used plenty of their own but have heard of range problems with the grid switches.  Once we're off lockdown I intend finding out on a current job.
  • What about controlling the existing downstairs light with a long range microwave presence detector, such that movement upstairs will trigger it.

    Thanks for all the replies.

the microwave sensor I did me too. This, but she didn’t like the idea of this. She’s old school.

I do like the idea of these wireless switches, the problem is, where is the receiver going to be put? Surely this will need to be accessible?
  • Hi, ok... so you, obviously, have the switch line at one end now, you only need a T&E to create a 2 way switching. You have the sw/l at one switch now all you need to do is get a feed at the other end and the use the 2 core as 'strappers'... could you do a simple layout of the wiring?

    regards...

But not if the hall and landing lights are on different circuits - as borrowing a L for the hall light from the landing lightswitch will then cross-connect L from one circuit with N from the other.

  • The quinetic range has made this even easier as they’ve now brought out a switch that has the receiver built in, so you just replace the existing switch with a receiver switch and add a second wireless one wherever needed.

I fitted one just before lockdown and was very easy!

The only downside is that it doesn’t look like a normal switch, but if they want 2-way with no chasing there’s got to be a compromise somewhere!

  • Or you can tuck the receiver into  the ceiling behind a dry wall box and blanking plate or behind a large a down light. - The newer receivers include screwed covers and a cord grip, providing the same protection as a screwed  junciton box
  • We live in exciting times.

Things we can do nowadays were pie in the sky a few years back.
