Part P update refresher request

Hi All

I'm having an extension built on my house and the work has stopped and so has my job.  The logical thing is make wiring the extension into my new job.  I haven't done any domestic wiring work for about 4 years and so I've lost track of the state of the Part P fiasco. Can someone fill me in on what the current state is.  I am no longer on the competant persons register, so I want to go down the planning application route.  Last time I did that it was only 360 for the job.   Also I have 17th edition and not 18th.  What chaged and is it worth getting the 18th?

Thanks

Stephen
  • If you are extending from existing ways in the CU, nothing is notifiable anyway, unless the extension is a bathroom crack on. If you need to notify to the council then your best bet is to talk to the chaps at the local building control office, as exactly what they will accept is a bit variable by region.
  • I assume you have applied for BR permission, so this is in principle already covered. You may need to pay for checking but this will not be huge. As Mike says, just crack on, produce an EIC and wait to see what happens, probably nothing. The changes to the 18th are fairly small. If you ask JP he may send you a few useful slides!
  • On the last couple of jobs I've done like this Building Control only wanted to see a completed EIC (on my tablet) and didn't even need a copy. When I was getting my new build garage and loft conversion signed off I gave the inspectors the wrong EIC's and they were still happy!
  • If you get it all done sharpish, BC will be so worried about social distancing that they won't want to send anybody round.

As an aside, the plumber (who seems to do good work) has declined to do the next stage of step-daughter's self build even though he would have the whole site to himself. You would think that he would have been glad of the work!
