Isolation for flats on card meters.

Does each flat ran from an landlords main board need individual means of isolation or can they just be isolated from an MCB in main board . The flats are rented and have card meters in them .
  • It is quite common to have only single pole isolation pre-meter - like a fuse or a red link (a fuse holder with a shorting bar in it - colour red so you do not muddle it with a real fuse, the real fuse is further back)

Is there a means of isolation in the flat either pre or post the card meter ? There needs to be a clear place to switch off in emergency for the flat user - a board with lots of MCBs may not be ideal, as they may not switch off the right one in a hurry.

It is not clear if there landlord metering, and the card meters are private sub-metering, or or if this is an un-metered 'building network', in which case there are considerations of security and the DNO have to be happy with it, and have additional rules.
  • The landlord has his own meter and then there are sub card meters in the flats , think the landlord sells the cards to the tenants, the is a cu in each flat so there is isolation in the flats, . The landlord wants the main board changing in the hallway , its near the front door. does each flat need individual isolation at the location of the main board or can the flats have isolation in the main board on a MCB.
  • these are just distribution cct.s after landlord's meters, The MCB will be fine for isolation.

I'm now going to ask if main bonding to water/ gas  whatever, is done before the distribution sub-main to each flat, and also if the sub-mains are either SWA, or routed so as not to need RCD, so if they are soft cable, like twin and earth, then in metal trunking, deeply buried, or surface visible. If not, then should have RCD protection, and then you really would want one per flat.

  • Seems like the 3rd reseller is allowed to make a profit on electric. I wonder how many entities have conspired together to as a get around for profit making?

Some of the flats I work at have the electric included in the rent, as do HMOs.
