6491x green yellow earth cable unprotected to gas bond

Hi

Been to look at some new build properties recently, they all had a gas bond 10mm cable clipped on the exterior of the brickwork to the gas meter position, admittedly the cable is only around 1m or less in distance out in the fresh air but wondered if this single insulated cable is acceptable to be clipped direct outside, normally 6491x cable is within containment?

Thoughts, please

Thanks

Billy
  • Live LV conductors would have to be in containment, but that's not required for protective conductors - which can actually be bare copper above 6mm² (subject to being suitable for the environment).

  • Thanks Andy
  • If this was a current carrying conductor - i.e. live or neutral, I'd be quite concerned. However, as the gas pipe is presumably also exposed to touch,  it would not really matter to the function or the safety  if the insulation all flaked off completely and the wire was bare.

In locations with bright  sunshine (not all places in the UK !! ), the plastic will at some point bleach and then eventually crumble, but probably not for several years if not decades.

It may be that in some cases the wire will end up being painted over, and may have been better in minitrunking of some kind. In that sense  this is not  a great solution, but there is no real danger, and while  not in the "good practice" spirit of the regs, I suspect one could argue that it not does actually break any rules. (and if it was indoors then clipped direct would be OK.)
  • Hi all, agree with comments so far in terms of cable being exposed but does it need to be run externally? 544.1.2 suggests this could have been avoided if connection was made at the point of entry to the building?
  • Hi

The meter isolating valve is in one of those external brown ground fitted meter cabinets. From there the gas pipe goes within the screed of property I think, to boiler then T to the hob. Don't think there is any accessibility for the bond ?
