Dental practice

Dental practices are identified as falling within the scope of Section 710 and possibly Group 1. I just don’t see it. Can any one set out the risk that I might be missing? I am thinking of standard dental practices where anaesthetic gasses are no longer used. Nothing of an electrical nature goes in to the patient’s mouth. The drill is driven by compressed air.
  • The situation will vary from practice to practice according to the work that each individual one does.

710.415.2.1 Note 2 refers to supplementary bonding and dental chairs. There cannot be many these days that are not powered electrically.

Whenever you inject substances (local anaesthetic) you need to be prepared to deal with adverse reactions. Suckers and defibrillators will be battery-powered, but a reliable electrical supply is desirable.

Dentist surgery rooms are 710 locations. You need to show the head dentist 710 and ask him/ her to agree what group the various rooms are in. Then apply the required measures. I am thinking an Earth Reference Bar with bonding of all exposed and extraneous parts, Type A RCD  protection and lighting from separate circuits. If any area is Group 2 that needs a whole different requirement.

But unless the connecting tube is fully insulating you could be delivering the voltage on the compressor's c.p.c. into a tooth. I don't know if they use any steel wires for braiding/reinforcement of the hoses or any semiconducting layers to help with dissipating static. Might be worth considering...

Besides which, whilst there are air-powered ones, there are also electric ones. Article here.

  • There was a monster thread on this subject a couple of years ago, if you have a spare two hours to read it.

If you worry about being sat in the Dentists Chair...do not read this
