Assumed ambient temperature behind cooker? (Cable derating)

Hi,

I have a 40A cooker circuit (Type B RCBO). That would be borderline 6mm2 at <=40C ambient, 10mm2 at higher temperatures.

Does anyone have a rule of thumb for how warm it gets behind a free standing cooker? 40C is quite warm and modern devices are probably better insulated than older one.

Cheers :)

Tim
  • The ambient behind the cooker is unlikely to be anything like 40C. Now apply diversity to the circuit. Your cable will not even get more than a few degrees above ambient, whatever that is.
  • Thanks Dave.

I remember in the 70s, our electric cooker's oven took the paint off the wall. Fortunately, things seem to have moved on a bit... ?

    Kind regards,

    Tim
