PVC out, LSOH in?

Grapevine is full of rumours that the next amendment will preclude the use of conventional 70' rated PVC cables, inc twin and earth and that only Low Smoke LSOH cables will be permitted.

Anyone heard anything on this?
  • The odd ideas very rarely come from the IET and mostly they seem to come from the IEC and Cenelec. Due to "Harmonisation", they then cause no end of a lot of trouble as BS7671 generally follows these documents. I'm afraid I still don't quite understand why, although there are some country derogations (differences) that can get through the standards process run by the BSI.

    What about outlawing plastic CUs?

  • The requirement in the Republic of Ireland is that the selection of all cables used in buildings shall meet, as a minimum, Class Dca,S2,d2,a2 in accordance with ISEN 50575 and the smoke generated shall result in transmittance values of not less than 60%. This is being rigidly enforced.
  • If you have seen a plastic bath burning you would never allow anyone to use a candle in a bathroom and definitely not standing on the rim of the bath.
  • And do not try to heat the water in a plastic bath by placing under it a Primus stove !.
  • Although you can boil water in an empty eggshell with a candle under it to produce a model steamship for fun.

Or make a paper kettle/water bmb and boil water in it without burning the paper.

Things we made as toys at little expense in pre IT days , ooh we had fun! ?
  • - we have done the boiling water in paper thing with the scouts - oh the wide eyes of enjoyment and surprise.

And we often get the chance to cover first aid for scalds and burns in the same meeting..
