Boiler Electrics.

Has anyone repaired a gas boiler where the rads. heat up but the hot water is not running properly from taps.

The boiler is an Alpha HECB25. All the electrics seem fine.

  • Worse than that, I knew someone who turned the taps on hoping for hot water  and gas came out of them. Makes your problem seem small zoom.

Mind you, same bloke , wired a novel extension lead to feed an (unwired) twin socket from an existing socket by putting a 13A plugtop at each end of the flex. "A quick way to give a power socket where you need it" . If he had a brain he would be dangerous.      Come to think of it though ! ! !
  • primatic cylinder?

    Combi boiler. No cylinder.

  • Diverter valve? Furry or constricted plate heat exchanger?
  • A lack of flow, a lack of temperature or both?  As Grumpy says the likely probles are the diverter valve or the secondary heat exchanger. The problem can usually be diagnosed by looking at the indicator lamps and seeing what the boiler does.

If you turn on the hot tap does the hot water demand lamp come on? Does the boiler then fire up?

Do you get hot water if the heating is already running?

Rads. get hot. Tap water pressure good. Water comes out warmish then cools after about 20 seconds.

  • Download the installation and servicing instructions and follow the flow diagrams at the back as far as you can without doing any gas work, better than guesswork ?

    A good idea. Thanks.

  • Don't ignore the obvious cryptic - there's a lot going on in a modern combi - and they way they interact isn't always obvious. I had one that would now and again stop producing hot tap water - turned out the bearing on flue fan was a bit rough - now and again it would slow down, the pressure difference across the fan would drop which tripped the pressure switch and the PCB shut down the burner. Didn't seem to happen in heating mode - possibly it wasn't running quite as hot then or wasn't producing quite the same volume of exhaust gasses.

That is interesting Andy. I was working for a customer a few weeks back and his old boiler would not fire up. The case was already off as a gas engineer had attended but not repaired the boiler. I did some basic electrical fault finding as the wiring diagram was pasted inside the boiler. The fan was faulty. It was getting an electrical  supply but was not rotating, just humming. Upon investigation I found online that a whole new fan assembly could be purchased, motor and blades, for under £45.00. I am thinking of training as a gas engineer. ££££££££££££
