Squirrel Damage

Hi Everyone,

Was at a job today where the client is looking to get their supply upgraded. I had a look at the current transformer to get an idea of its KVA and on inspection found that the earth conductors on both the HV and LV side of the transformer appear to have some squirrel damage to the insulation. Is this something I should get onto the DNO (Western Power) ASAP or is it not really a problem? Would appreciate some opinions!

  • It's not ideal, but as long as there's no contact between the HV and LV earths (e.g. via that barbed wire) and the damage is out of reach, I don't see it being a significant problem.

  • Thanks Andy, much appreciated! I must admit I did think that the placement of the barbed wire could potentrially be a concern, when I have seen anti-climb measures before they tend to be seperated from any cabling!
  • Round here the DNOs really only come out to something that is pretty much at the point of collapse, and that really isn't, unless there is something else wrong as well, in your shoes I'd not bother them - the main thing is that the earth core has not been severed.

Did it stop the wildlife getting any higher ?

  • If it was me ide tell the DNO if they fix it great if they choose not to then you've done your best to tell them if they ignor it thats there fault and there liability if it all goes pear shaped
  • Thanks everyone, like you say Kelly i'll give the DNO a quick call then its in their hands!
