543.2.3

Why does 543.2.3 prohibit the use of a gas pipe or oil pipe as a protective conductor?

Z.
  • Why wouldn't it?
  • Presumably because any substantial fault current might damage the pipe and release the  contents, with unfortunate results.

Also any voltage differences might result in sparks near oil or gas tanks, or near oil or gas burning equipment.
  • Is this a thinly veiled question about bonding gas pipes?

  • The exact wording has change a bit over the years

14th edition 1970 suggests not using gas or water pipes as the sole means of earthing - presumably the new fangled plastic pipes were a concern, (this would be before PME became so popular.)

15th edition is closer to the current wording.

Not be used as the sole electrode..

16th edition tightens this to not to be used as an electrode at all, where we are today.

By this time PME was pretty common, and some of the issues of diverted currents were coming to light,

and gas meter  fitters were instructed to carry bonding kits, so that if the meter is to be removed, the pipes around it are linked for the duration

    That's no answer. Reasons required.

Nothing veiled here Andy. I am inviting more information on the subject to educate me more, and to get a fuller picture of the subject. Any pipe containing gas or oil may be included in the subject if under electrical fault conditions it poses a danger. A new specific thread, a new start. Don't forget that I am only a Technician so am still learning.
