Lubing Up Yer Conduit Wires Before the BIG Pull.

What do you use as a lubricant?

Washing up liquid?

Tallow?

Cutting fluid?

WD40?

Soap?

Chicken soup?

Does lube make a difference? Pulling wire through conduit with Yellow 77 from Ideal Industries. - Bing video

  • None of those Z, special stuff which will not damage cables is sold. In bigger size duct pulls, it comes in a pot with a special brush that you pull through first. It is similar to Hellerine which you may have come across for cable sleeves in electronics. It would be suitable for small jobs. It makes a considerable difference, big cables on a long run would stick otherwise or get the sheath damaged. The ideal one is probably similar although others are not yellow!

I bought 20 drums each 25 litres of BT approved cable duct pulling lubricant 15? years ago for £60 as it was out of date. Quite how I've no idea so I tend to be over generous in its use. I think I've still got 6 drums left. I bought them from a guy up in Yorkshire as part of a moling package and put them in the back of my van that only has a perforate bulkhead. Driving home on the motorway I was very concerned about having an accident resulting in 500 litres of the stuff escaping.... The fire brigade would never have been able to hold onto me to pull me from the wreckage!

Prior to that I bought some blue coloured stuff in 25 litre drums but being a person who doesn't wear gloves, I ended up with a blue tinge to my cuticles looking as if I had some vitamin deficiency or similar....

  • Well, there's a fing!

Over 50 hard years' of pulling imperial, and metric, cables through new, and old, conduits... I have always used tallow!

    Never had a problem!

Maybe I should be worried now, due to the effect that tallow has on cables? Hahaha... too bloody LATE me ole China!

  • I’m a fan of yellow 77 and I was fairly surprised to see it specified on a railway job I’m currently engaged on. (building some stations in London with a ton of conduit)
  • I agree that the oil from Hellermans, is pretty much a miracle product. (not to be confused with   Hellmans .. though it is also slippy. )  Very good for things like getting coax cables in to nycoil (like this )  which is rather harder than a straight conduit -  can be quite a 'fun'  operation,

Not tried Dave's idea of a pre-pull wet wipe though, maybe we should do that next time and blow a sponge through with the air line.

Another Yellow 77 fan here, I have used errm specialist lube from Asda before now

  • If you a in the back of beyond without your wassisname, then  I find that at a push fairy liquid or other liquid soap is quite effective, but never really comes off, and picks up all available brick dust and sand at the first opportunity.

Mind you, I am surprised to find Y77 at screwfix

  • The videos above are instructive, the reduction in force is about 3 times less by eye. Very useful. The Screw price seems very good, they sell a lot of the ideal range.
