Extent of Electrical Installation Covered by this Report.

A potential customer has just handed me a copy of an E.I.C.R. The reason given for the  extent of the report is:

“Consumer Unit Only.”

The report seems to be genuine regarding the information provided. The reason for it is that the house is let to a tenant. A basic Test Schedule is included.

I believe that the 60 Amp fuse was the original from Noah's time. Very old and original. Complying with a 1953 B.S. printed on it. The seal was wire with a circular lead seal.

I can't imagine anyone putting an 80 Amp fuse into a 60 Amp carrier where the carrier is clearly marked by the manufacturer as being rated at 60 Amps.

Was a paper seal from the Supplier applied after you had determined this ?.

    No.

Edit, add. But I had to prove the value of the main fuse as the tails were only 16.00mm2 in size, so if somebody had put a 100 Amp fuse in the carrier it would have been wrong. Also there was no isolator so I had to pull the main fuse to install the new consumer unit. An official  request for a new seal will be made when all work is finished.

There is an official procedure by SSE (in my area) for accessing their main fuses. Beforehand, they issue strips of numbered, stick on labels to those qualified, electrical contractors; they also require notification of each useage, in order that a follow up can be made for their seal to be fitted. I fully endorse that procedure!

Indeed, it seems to be a very sensible system.

  • I would add that a registered sparks can get 5 paper seals. When one is used, the sparks notifies SSE and gets a replacement. It's up to SSE when they go round and apply a metal seal.

It is good that SSE treats electricians as adults.

In my case and I have been using paper seals for over 10 years; they issue me with 10 off which have to be used; and notification made to them before another set of seals is issued. They do follow up as I have found when I was phoned on my mobile, when they couldn't find one of my notified addresses.

They will issue them after having confirmation that one is a “competent” member of a registered organisation, not just as an electrician/adult, they have to be careful in the present blame culture.
