Hole and Notches in close proximity

Are there any regs relating to drilling a new hole below an existing notch.

Regs only seem to define the span criteria, and I can not see any guidance in Part P.

It would seem logical to me to offset any hole a set distance from a notch, but drilling a hole below a notch equally seems compliant?

  • The accepted areas for notching and those for holes don't quite overlap, notches 0.07 to 0.25 of span, and holes 0.25 to 0.4 of span. So you can't go directly below a notch.

Distance between holes is 3x largest diameter of hole. Can't find distance between notches. So I assume minimum distance between a notch and a hole would be 3x the hole diameter measured horizontally. But I am guessing that as there is no definite guidance I can find.

  • Rule no. 1: use an existing hole (or notch) if you can.

Holes should be 3 diameters apart (centre to centre, so 2 diameters between) so it would seem wise to keep the same spacing from a notch.

  • The accepted areas for notching and those for holes don't quite overlap, notches 0.07 to 0.25 of span, and holes 0.25 to 0.4 of span. So you can't go directly below a notch.

That might be the modern theory - older practice was to notch wherever a pipe or cable was wanted to run - regardless of where in the span it was. On the other hand timbers in older houses tended to be deeper, thicker and probably of better quality timber than modern minimalist standards, so notches 'out of place' very rarely caused any problems in practice. I can well imagine coming across an existing notch where you'd want to put a hole these days, and re-using a notch is tricky if you're using T&E given the 50mm rule. Another case for BS 8436 cable perhaps.

  • My Avatar picture thingy is taken as such a silly example, I rewired and did the holes, put cables in then a few days later the joists were butchered by the heating installers, every single joist where I`d put mee cables within recommended span. Silly ???

  • My gas tutor once told me engineers work to the nearest mm, architects to the nearest cm and plumbers to the nearest room
