Part P outside 13 amp socket outlet Notifiable?

Hi

I just wanted to check if the following is notifiable under the Part P regs:

An installation of an IP rated 13amp twin socket, to the external front of the house near the front door in a domestic premises. Circuit is extended from an existing ring main, which in turn is protected by an RCD 30ma. A minor works cert has been provided for the install.

I am assuming as it is not a special location or a new circuit it is not notifiable ?

Just checking to see if that is right as I have seen a note in the Part P document that discuss external installations being Notifiable?

Thanks

Billy

  • Are you in Wales ? If so it is notifiable.

In England, not notifiable, as not a completely new circuit, nor a new CU nor within 60cm of a bath or shower. (the only 3 notifiable electrical works these days)

The original version of part P had garden wiring as notifiable, and a load of other things as well, but England dropped that in the 2012 revision - you may be looking at something based on older advice.

Wales is still running on the older version.

  • I am not going to say "Part P might have been started with good intent by some in the first instance but then became a right old debacle" but I think that Part P might have been started with good intent by some in the first instance but then became a right old debacle

  • Hi Mike,

Thanks for that, see below an extract from the Part P document, am I reading it correct?

  • England dropped quite a few of the bits required for notification purposes some years ago whilst Wales stayed with it. So it might depend where you are as far as that is concerned.

  • That is true. Part P does apply to those areas, but Part P merely states that all electrical work must be done to ensure safety.

That is It in its entirety.

However, you are confusing Part P (above) with Regulation 12 which states the notification requirements in England (Schedule 4 still in Wales) and Approved Document P which contains the actual legislation (in shaded green areas) plus a lot of "guidance".

It has only been seventeen years.

  • "It has only been seventeen years." I know a Building Contractor type who had no idea of CDM regs over a longer period than that, he will not be alone. So it all counts as "new fangled regs" Geoff Wink

  • that is quite correct. Part P does not apply, even to new circuits, new consumer units or work near a bath, in any other classes of building.

But note that is only an  approved document, and that is  the civil service interpretation of one way to meet the law. The actual law for England  is

here The notifiable works are only as described in para 6A of reg12. Nothing else legally  requires notification in England. Though of course you still have a duty of care and should do proper checks and not leave live wires hanging out etc.

    Mike.

  • Part P applies to ALL electrical work in dwellings and associated areas.

That some work might be notifiable - or not; Part P still applies.

  • The Notifiable section is a bit further on, in paragraph 2.5
