DOOR BELL CAMERA

Good afternoon All

I am thinking of installing a door bell camera at my house. I have been looking at information on line and I get more confused the more I look.

My specification is.

1. Mains power to the device to avoid battery charging or changing batteries.

2. I don't want to pay an ongoing subscription or fee.

3. An indoor sounder or alert.

4. High resolution colour camera.

5. Will link to and can be viewed on my IPhone.

Can anyone advise me of a suitable quality device to install?

Thanks

JP

  • I was given one for Christmas, it’s not wired and should just need bringing indoors to be charged occasionally, but I have had to put it in the airing cupboard to dry out a couple of times after it misted up.

The battery charging is not an issue.

  • Do you already have existing doorbell wiring to the door. What type of transformer do you have, if any? Is there a wired indoor chime that you would like to reuse?

  • No door bell wiring, transformer or chime installed at the moment.

I can SDS a hole behind the outside push and supply  install SELV wiring to it without much of a problem. No problem with a 230V supply inside.

    Thanks

  • Hard-wiring is usually better. You can either power the doorbell with a plug in power supply or house a SELV transformer in a small (CU type) enclosure.

As you probably know, Ring is popular but requires a subscription if you want to store the video footage.

Also worth looking at is Blink by Amazon and EZVIZ.

  • I think Scolmore Group do a camera door bell which may be wroth a look

I installed one of these to save needing a separate transformer. It provides 8V and the (mechanical) bell is sounded when the 8V is shorted. I just used an illuminated push button with it, but I believe you can also use it with some smart door bells which charge from the 8V and you'd then get both notification on the app (or whatever) as well as the bell ringing when it's pressed. Easy to install (I was lazy and just wired it to a plug).

  • Thanks for your input so far.

However nothing yet to satisfy my original specification. Either not mains powered and/or subscription free to link to my IPhone.

I am going to the Elex show in Exeter on Wednesday and Thursday this week I will have a look there.

    Thanks
