USB charger outlet in Bathroom Zone2

I've been asked to add a USB charging port into a bedroom with a bath in it.

My understanding of BS7671 is that a room with a bath is a bathroom. As such the outlet would be in zone 2 of the bath.

Would I need to power the charger via a safety transformer and could this be built into a +IP4 enclosure similar to a shaver outlet

Thanks for your assistance

  • Also, I presume there is not an interlock between the shaver and USB sockets, so someone could use an electric razor and a charging phone a the same time, one in each hand, but fittings like this are not supposed to supply more than one hand held appliance at a time and with the dual voltage shaver sockets the interlocked socket shutters prevent two shavers being used at the same time.

  • BS61558-2-5 allows this. Its under electronic circuits.

Note the low power, only 12w 5v. There is no PD power.

  • Worth noting my cardiologist doesnt recommend this as teeth have a nerve pathway to the heart and pp3 have cause arrhythmia.

  • I have found USB C IPX4 connectors that I can fit ti a plate or grid. I'd just have to make the plate to the same standard.

  • Frequency voltage/ current and time, all finely tuned. The bodies nerve do not react to higher frequencies and the 'burn' is the desired result. There are no pain receptors in the heart but it does make you cough?

  •  The pathway is important here. As others have pointed out, there are routes to severe damage ... but not, in otherwise healthy people, the heart.

  • Wow. So much great information here guys.

    If I've understood  correctly

    1. It is possible to have a USB in Zone 2.

    2. It must be IPX4 rated (im not sure how to protect the pins)

    3. The output must be SELV

    4. The converter must be outside zone 2 and hard wired.

    5. It must be on a 30rcd

    6. It must have limited energy ie 20va (3.1A/ 5v) {base on shaver socket energy}

From the safety risk, these may less then what is allowed, but due to the potential of a submerged body in fresh water and the higher PD voltages and current that those pose a risk.

At present, im not sure if the idea is to use the USB in a bath but it is a foreseeable risk when the socket is so close to the bath.

It is a shame that 12v or even 24v  wouldn't be used but reading between the lines, thes voltages could increase risks.

I presume there are no restrictions  once outside zone 2 but  not the full 3m away from zone 1?

    Thanks for all the comments

  • There are no pain receptors in the heart

Clearly, you haven't had an awake cardiac ablation procedure; and surely, it is common knowledge that a myocardial infarction (heart attack) can be very painful.

  • I have had several and countless biopsies. Over 100 cardiac inversions or jump starts as I call them, most awake - the external ones really hurt the internal ones dont.

The only sensation I or others I deal with feel is the catheter moving around.

  • In the 'good contact', wet body case, the sort of [low] limits used in agricultural areas may be more relevant (think of licking the brass / steel nails in a lemon test..).

Quite a different consideration compared to the dehumidifier in the laundry-bathroom scenario Grimacing.
