Sussex Network

 Seven Sisters cliff formation

Welcome to IET Sussex!

We are the local network of the IET across East and West Sussex, organising events and seminars and promoting engineering in schools and businesses across the two counties. To get involved, you might like to come along to one of our events. We have a wide variety of lectures throughout the year either in Crawley or Falmer, all free of charge, and you don't need to be an IET member to attend. Visit the events page filtered by Sussex Local Network to find out about our upcoming events.

If you have any questions on the Sussex Network or are interested in volunteering for any of our activities then please contact our secretary at sussex@ietvolunteer.org.

Our events:

Our June 2026 Talk - How to control Permanent Magnet AC Motors

How do you control a modern permanent magnet AC motor in vehicle applications such as traction, and ancillary functions such as hydraulic pump control?  This talk takes you through the process of motor modelling, control strategies, control loops, field-weakening operation, possible hazards and their mitigation.  These steps give an overview of how a modern PMAC motor control system is realised.
The talk also tries to answer the question, "Is Electrification here to stay?"  After many false dawns, is the momentum in swapping from internal combustion to electric vehicles now too much to stop or will another era of "cheap oil" stall future developments?

The talk took place at Worthing College on Tuesday 9th June and was the last in the 2025/26 programme. IET Sussex talks start again in September 2026.

A recording of the talk can be found on Our IET Sussex Network YouTube channel at the link above.

In addition to the full programme of events in the list above, you can visit the IET events page filtered by Sussex Local Network to find out about our upcoming events.

Please remember, if you or one of your colleagues could give a talk to our members and guests then please contact us at Sussex@ietvolunteer.org.

STEM Events

A number of our Sussex Network members, who are STEM Ambassadors, volunteer to help run workshops in schools and help on an IET table at STEM fairs.

'STEM in the Park', took place in the Memorial Gardens in Crawley on Saturday 16th May. At the IET stand children will be able to make an LED torch, build electric circuits, find out about fuel cells, wind and solar power and learn about different types of engineering. There was also be information for parents.

Also in May (just) was the Science Day as part of the Steyning Festival. We had an IET stand in the Big Tent at Fletchers Croft in Steyning on Saturday 30th May. Again, children were able to make an LED torch, build electric circuits, find out about fuel cells, wind and solar power and learn about different types of engineering. Again we had lots of information for parents.

Below are a couple of examples of past STEM events, the video being a 'Fan Boats' workshop in a school and the photo taken at the Lewis STEM Fair in November 2025. The video was produced by the school and we have written permission to publish it.

If you would like to volunteer for one of our STEM events or find out how to become a STEM Ambassador then please contact our Education Officer. Not only is it great fun, but you can help engage the next generation of engineers and technicians.

IET Sussex Network Community Volunteers:

Meet our volunteers. These are the people who organise technical talks and STEM events and run your local network.
