Welcome to IET Sussex!

We are the local network of the IET across East and West Sussex, organising events and seminars and promoting engineering in schools and businesses across the two counties. To get involved, you might like to come along to one of our events. We have a wide variety of lectures throughout the year either in Crawley or Falmer, all free of charge, and you don't need to be an IET member to attend. Visit the events page filtered by Sussex Local Network to find out about our upcoming events.

If you have any questions on the Sussex Network or are interested in volunteering for any of our activities then please contact our secretary at sussex@ietvolunteer.org.

Meet our IET Sussex network community volunteers

Our events:

Our March talk took place at Crawley College, actually in the new 'Institute of Technology' building on the College campus. In that talk Dr David James gave an introduction to Industrial Process Automation. After explaining what he ment by and 'Industrial Process' and describing the range of engineers who collaborate to design the plant and the automation system, he took the audience through the various levels of the automation system. If you were unable to attend then you can find a recording of the talk on the Sussex Network YouTube channel. The talk provided an overview of an engineering discipline that rarely gets into the press.

In addition to the full programme of events in the above list, you can visit the IET events page filtered by Sussex Local Network to find out about our upcoming events.

Please remember, if you or one of your colleagues could give a talk to our members and guests then please contact us at Sussex@ietvolunteer.org.

Our April talk is on the subject of commercial flight simulators. The presentation will briefly describe the use of flight simulation by commercial airlines. It will introduce the main components of the simulator and identify key differences from military aircraft simulators.  The speaker will discuss the pros and cons of simulation versus simulation of cockpit avionics and give a brief history of technology progress in the simulation host computing engine. He intends to give an overview of the architecture of the Boeing 787 flight simulator and provide an overview of simulator use in pilot training.

The talk will take place at Worthing College on Tuesday 14th April. Refreshments from 6:30, talk starting at 7pm.

STEM Events

A number of our Sussex Network members, who are STEM Ambassadors, volunteer to help run workshops in schools and help on an IET table at STEM fairs. Here are a couple of examples of STEM events, the video being a 'Fan Boats' workshop in a school and the photo taken at the Lewis STEM Fair in November 2025. The video was produced by the school and we have written permission to publish it.

If you would like to volunteer for one of our STEM events or find out how to become a STEM Ambassador then please contact our Education Officer. Not only is it great fun, but you can help engage the next generation of engineers and technicians.

CPD certificates

CPD certificate will be added here.

IET Sussex Network Community Volunteers:

Meet our volunteers. These are the people who organise technical talks and STEM events and run your local network.

It is a good opportunity for young engineers to gain 'soft skills' experience. So if you are interested in helping then do get in touch.
