To help inspire the next generation of astronauts and engineers, we have today launched a new competition with iconic comic Beano inviting six to 13-year olds to design a product which they could not live without on Mars.The ‘Life on Mars’ competition is open for entries from now until 3 July 2019. Entrants must send their design for a product, along with a few sentences on how they would adapt it to work on Mars. The competition has launched after new IET research found children are looking to space just as much as their grandparents were 50 years ago, but for very different reasons. Nearly two thirds* (61%) of children are worried about environmental damage to the planet, with 49% believing we will have to look to Space for somewhere to live in the future. Weds 5th June 2019 Sarath Tennakoon joined us from Carnegie Mellon University in Rwanda to update us on the latest technologies of the DC power super grid, HVDC, and the advantages of offshore wind energy . The mechanisms of the wind turbine and the scaleability of them was also discussed. It was a great reunion for many colleagues as Sarath was a lecturer at Staffordshire University and is now an Emeritus Professor. The highlight was the discussions this prompted with the group of over fifty attendees, with the R&D team from GE being present amongst engineers from all areas. Life cycle costs (LCC) play a pivotal role in the financial management of construction projects around the world. As a part of the whole life cost (WLC), they allow critical decisions to be made about the importance of capital and longer-term costs that ultimately affect asset performance, longevity, disaster resilience and sustainability. It is for this reason that the ICMS Coalition has revised and extended the scope of International Construction Measurement Standards (ICMS) to incorporate this broader cost classification. Last year's IET Young Woman Engineer of the Year (YWE) winner, Sophie Harker, features in the latest Engineering Matters podcast .In the podcast, Sophie discusses how she first became interested in engineering, her career to date and her aspirations to become an astronaut. YPCC Project: Engineering Open House goes Global 18/19 Goal/Objective: Engineering Open House events held in three additional countries in 2019 Identify potential organisations who would be interested in holding an Engineering Open House event in their place of business . Work with them to plan, promote, and execute the event. Background Engineering Open House is currently a UK only initiative that sees businesses open their doors to children and their parents to see engineering in real life. The annual Active and Passive RF Devices Seminar was held this year on 22 May 2019 in Cardiff University The delegates were treated to a full day of speakers discussing a wide variety of topics. The day kicked off with Professor Sam Evans, the head of School of Engineering at Cardiff University, welcoming us to the university and providing some background about the school’s work in this field. Professor Khaled Elgaid later gave a more in depth talk about the work currently happening at Cardiff University. Markus Loerner, Rohde and Schwartz travelled from Germany to give an interesting talk on beamforming RF front end design and test. The TPN’s roadshow was held in Salford this year, in the old converted fire station, which is now part of University of Salford. The event is an open forum for research to share their research on a wide range of topics from electromagnetic devices, systems to the propagation of electromagnetic fields . With the recent increase of global warming around the world we begin to wonder what we can do to bring a change and reduction to it before it causes a catastrophic event which can’t be undone. That’s why GE volunteers and some Student Volunteers from IET Mahsa On Campus(OC) in conjunction with Earth Day 2019 decided to organize a mangrove planting event, which would see the volunteers plant a total of 500 Trees and gain useful knowledge on Mangroves. The main goal of this event was not only to plant trees but also to create awareness to the volunteers on the importance of tree planting and the positive effect it has on the society.
