  • Opportunities and Challenges for Cyber-Physical System Design

    At the beginning of June, the Control & Automation TPN held an event on the subject of Opportunities and Challenges for Cyber-Physical System Design . More than 30 delegates attended this technical event, which included two presentations - giving both an academic and industrial perspective. The speakers were Dr Eric Kerrigan , who is a Reader in Control Engineering and Optimization at Imperial College London, where he has a joint appointment in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering as well as the Department of Aeronautics, and Dr Andy Chang , National Instruments. Dr Chang is a senior manager for academic research at National Instruments in Austin, Texas. He is currently a PhD candidate in the department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Texas, Austin. Delegates…

  • Online Careers Solution

    The Railway Network would like to draw your attention to a new project that is being developed by the Young Railway Professionals (YRP) in collaboration with Routes into Rail . One of the Routes into Rail strategic projects is the development of an Online Careers Solution to promote rail careers to students and feedback on the idea from the Railway industry would be appreciated whilst they are still considering what this solution should be like. The YRP have prepared this survey (just 6 questions) which they’d be grateful if you could please respond to.   • Autonomous Vehicles: From Theory To Full Scale Applications

    18th June saw the Control & Automation TPN's flagship event on Autonomous Vehicles: from theory to full scale applications. This was a full day event, held in a magnificent venue in central Paris and was a joint venture between the TPN and CNRS, GdR Robotique and Renault. We were also very pleased to welcome a couple of our colleagues from the IET France network to the event and managed to film a quick chat with them both. Over 70 delegates attended and heard from some fantastic speakers, including Shad Laws from Renault, Serge Lambermont, Automated Driving Director, Delphi US Silicon Valley, Axel Fuchs from Quanergy, and Professor Michael Fisher, University of Liverpool, to name but a few.   • 30th Anniversary of The IET Satellite Communications Systems Course

    A note from David Bookham CEng MIET Course Chairman As the satellite communications industry has evolved, each new technology has provided increased throughput and flexibility. This has resulted in highly sophisticated Broadband satellite terminals becoming a commercially viable proposition to both commercial and domestic users alike. The evolution started with the development of advanced Forward Error Correction (FEC) algorithms ensuring quasi error free links which were well suited to packet switched traffic. Since IP traffic could now be carried with almost zero packet loss, the use of ACM (using high order modulation schemes and flexible FEC codes) resulted in the commercial exploitation of Ka band and the use of small beam sizes and more efficient spectrum usage.     This was originally an article in IET Member News The IET Southern California (SoCal) Local Network (LN) was recently given the opportunity to have a tour of Google Irvine. Since its reformation in early 2012, the SoCal LN has gone from strength to strength. It now averages eight meetings/tours a year and interest continues to grow – so much so that it now often has more guests than IET members in attendance! This may be due in part to the range of special events it offers, as LN volunteer Julian Harvey highlighted: “We’re concentrating on one off, difficult to organise events, which started in January 2014 with a tour of Space X.     IET President-elect Naomi Climer listed as one of the 50 most influential women in UK IT Computer Weekly has revealed the 50 most influential women in UK IT who are making a difference to the digital economy. Among those recognised in its fourth annual listing is our President-elect, Naomi Climer, who joins other female role models from companies such as Microsoft, Shell, Dell, TalkTalk and TechUK.   • Historical Photos Circulating Depict Women Medical Pioneers

    You may have seen the shot: it’s of a group of medical students and they’re all women. One’s from Japan, one’s from India and the third from Syria. They’re all wearing traditional clothes from their home countries. Nothing too remarkable in that, you might say. Until you see the date. 1885. These women were students at the Women’s Medical College of Pennsylvania (WMCP). The original image resides in the archives of Drexel University which eventually absorbed the successor to the WMCP in 2003. Archivist Matt Herbison was able to dig up much more about the women as well. These women were nothing short of medical pioneers. All three graduated and each of them thus became the first woman from their respective countries to get a degree in western medicine. Read more...

    Through the perseverence of Russ Burnham, memebers and geuest of the Southern California Local network were treated to an excelelnt tour of Blizzard Entertainment. Having been founded in the early 1990's Blizzard Entertainment is best known for it's fantasy genre of games, with Warcraft: orcs vs Humans becoming it's first breakthorugh hit, followed by the massively multi-player online role-playing game World of Warcraft, currently in its fifth expansion. At the center of their campus they have an Orc Statue surrounded on the eight sides by their eight core values, starting with Gameplay First, and including Play Nice Play Fair and Think Globally. So much has happened since I introduced the winter newsletter that it is difficult to know when to start so I think I will give just a few highlights of the key things. For those who came along to the RNLI talk in Poole in February, I am sure they will agree with me when I say that we were treated to an extremely good talk put on by a very enthusiastic team from the RNLI.     FOURTEEN members of the Institution of Engineering and Technology-Institut Teknologi Brunei (I2SC) visited the Butra HeidelbergCement (BHC) recently. The group, led by Jevons Quaimbao Penaflor, aimed to get a first-hand experience on Brunei’s Cement Production Industry and learn about the processes involved. During the visit, BHC gave a brief presentation on the general processes and the technical aspects involved in cement production.The group were then given a tour around the main production sites such as the quality control lab, control centre, cement finish mill, the silo storage area, packing area and storage areas.     A PERSONNEL from the Ministry of Defence yesterday took home the first prize of the Present Around The World (PATW) 2015 competition for her creative idea on building a concrete canoe. Tieng Chwei Peng’s winning presentation covered intricate explanation about the engineering aspects of building a floating concrete canoe including material research, hull design, structural analysis, engineering construction and project management taking in example from the American Society of Civil Engineers’ National concrete canoe competition.     A talk on raising awareness on the dangers of asbestos was held yesterday at the SEAMEO VOCTECH, Gadong. Organised jointly by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) and Engineer division of the Brunei Institution of Surveyors, Engineers and Architects (PUJA), the event drew around 70 registered participants comprising personnel from the Public Works Department (JKR), Ministry of Defence (MinDef), Ministry of Development (MoD), consultants and contractors.
