    In my second of a series of posts in the run up to our fantastic event - the International Robotics Showcase - I wanted to concentrate on another exciting aspect of robotics engineering. A huge area of robotics engineering is looking to help people who are unable to walk - to walk again. With the help of robotic limbs this is becoming a reality for more and more people. At the forefront of this work is Dr Homayoon Kazerooni who is a professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley, where he also serves as the director of the Berkeley Robotics and Human Engineering Laboratory.   • Newsletter Distribution - North Yorkshire

    The Yorkshire and Humber Region (North, South and West Yorkshire & the Humber) has, for many years, distributed a paper-based newsletter initially by post and, lately, via an insert in the E&T magazine. The Communities Committee of the UK (the IET organisation, run by volunteers, that allocates budgets to the Local Networks) asked all networks to review their expenditure on newsletter production and seek to distribute event information and other details electronically via the regular e-mails and Engineering Community (here!). There has been much discussion in the region about ceasing the production of a paper newsletter but there has never been any concensus in the regional committee to move to electronic distribution of the newsletter.   • Let's get real about supporting women in tech

    Despite the well-documented (really obvious) gender gap in the tech sector, we’re not seeing a lot of improvement, and it’s time to take some serious action. Right now, women (who represent  57 percent  of the U.S. labor force) fill just a quarter (26.5 percent) of tech jobs at the top U.S. tech firms, and earn, on average, just 85 percent of what their male counterparts do. The thing is, only  18 percent of women hold leadership positions  in these companies. At the top 100 VC firms, a mere  7 percent  of managing partners are women.   Could it be because men just do a better job? Well, no.   • IET/ACostE Project Controls Network Committee 2018

    The Projects Controls Network (TPN) is collaboration between the IET and the Association of Cost Engineers with the aim of providing a Professional Knowledge Network which seeks to educate, inform, and improve the knowledge of Project Controls. The requirement for Project Controls is international and, universal, and cuts across all Technical, Engineering, Financial and Commercial areas.   • YPS: IET Faraday Challenge In IDA Tech Saturday 2016

    On 21 May 2016, the IET Singapore Young Professionals Section rolled out its Faraday Challenge at Suntec Convention Centre Singapore, for a large-scale event named “Tech Saturday” co-ordinated by Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA). IDA aims to educate the public about the importance of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) as a vital nation-building element. The IET Singapore was invited by IDA to organise Faraday Challenge for target audience of youngsters of up to 14 years old. Our Faraday Challenge was adapted from the the IET "Mission to Mars" package. It received overwhelming response from the parents and it was fully subscribed before the event.     Rohde & Schwarz is initiating a quest to find the most innovative and unusual uses for the R&S Scope Rider, the rugged handheld oscilloscope with lab performance and functionality. Since we introduced the R&S Scope Rider we have come across many examples of the different ways in which our customers are using the instrument. This made us think; why not run a competition to search for the most unusual or innovative applications where the Scope Rider could be used? To start the competition we sent an R&S Scope Rider into space with the entire mission being filmed by The Institution of Engineering and Technology’s IET.tv. In fact the UK government has announced robotics and autonomous systems (RAS) as one of the eight technologies that will propel the UK to future growth. The recent capital investment from the UK government through the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) has resulted in the creation of eight dedicated capital facilities and four centres of doctoral trainings brought together under the EPSRC UK-RAS Network.
