  • IoW Schools Hydrogen Challenge

    The Isle of Wight Schools Hydrogen Challenge is a hands on, interactive programme of workshops for young people to engage in renewable technologies. The workshops, delivered by STEM professionals, explore the possibilities of a low-carbon future and directly support the curriculum at Key Stages 2, 3 and 4 (ages 7 to 16). Our approach engages young people from a variety of backgrounds, at all levels of academic ability. Our Secondary School workshop challenges teams to design, build and race their very own hydrogen fuel cell vehicle. Working in a process of iterative design, participants are encouraged to build a car as quickly as possible before racing their design in a test of efficiency.     Our Chairman, Ronaldo Ronaldo, recently attended Hannover Messe 2015. Here he gives us his personal feedback from the event: Hannover Messe 2015 once again became the forum of discussion and showcase of the development of Industrie4.01 or also deeply associated with Cyber Physical Systems (CPS). Having attended the exhibition, I would like to outline the recent updates on this topic thus far with some personal opinions. CPS and Industrie 4.0 are often used interchangeably in the media and have undoubtedly create some confusion. I'm taking a view that Industrie 4.0, being hoped to be the Fourth Industrial Revolution, is an impact by adoption of technologies such as CPS or Internet of Things (IoT)2.   • Visit and Presentations at Qinetiq Boscombe Down

    The Aerospace Network recently organised a tour of the test and evaluation facilities at Qinetiq, Boscombe Down, followed by an evening lecture programme. Tour of Test and Evaluation Facilities After the usual safety briefing, we were welcomed formally by Paul Cheetham (Head of Engineering Governance) who showed a short video about the history and structure of Qinetiq followed by a briefing. I summarise below some points that I gleaned from the briefing. Qinetiq operates Boscombe Down and its facilities on behalf of MOD with about 1600 staff on site – roughly one-third of the UK Qinetiq staffing. RAF staff are also at Boscombe for their operational knowledge and as part of the “Empire Test Pilot School”, one of three such facilities in the world. The others are in the USA and France.   • Jeff Utley - MBE Presentation

    Jeffrey Utley MBE GCGI IEng FIET Earlier this year, Jeff Utley one of the West Yorkshire Network volunteers was awarded an MBE in the New Year’s Honours List for services to engineering in Yorkshire.     Date Saturday, May 23, 2015, 10:00 - 12:00 Program Highlights Biodiesel is a clean, low-carbon transport fuel that can be used as a substitute for fossil diesel, or blended with fossil diesel in diesel engines without modification. ASB Biodiesel operates a biodiesel factory in Hong Kong with the capacity to produce 100,000 tons of low-carbon transport fuel per year. ASB Biodiesel's product is produced from waste. Therefore, it does not lead to land use changes. It also produces significantly lower greenhouse gas emissions because it avoids the upstream carbon emissions associated with crop production and seed oil extraction.   • Inspirations 2015 - STEM Education Showcase

    IET North Yorkshire Network are pleased to be supporting and participating in this year's "Inspirations". This event, to be held at Elvington Airfield on 25th June, is a STEM Education showcase open to young people from the whoe of North Yorkshire. Last year 1500 students took part in the event which this year includes an exhibtion of students' projects - the best of which are rewarded with prizes. Many engineering companies from around the region present demonstrations and run workshops to make the whole one-day event a really exciting and interactive experience fro all involved. IET North Yorkshire Network volunteers will be participating as judges and assiting with a robotics workshop in collaboration with local robotics company, James Fisher Nuclear Ltd.     How complex can a system be? "Very" is the answer! Consider the human body and trying to ensure its health. Wednesday 13th May, Professor Nicos Karcanias of City University gave London Central a fascinating lecture that tackled a much higher level of complexity than we are used to! And I believe his assertion that this was a "non-technical" skim over the subject! Of the 100 plus appreciative attendees, there were some who'd wanted more depth - that would have fried my brain... Who would have guessed that the Ancient Greeks were working on the same problems, defining terminology that has stood the test of time? Look up Kallicratides if you really want to confirm that...   • Sacred Cows - Event Review

    The Sacred Cows (or “Scared Cows” as the Royal Society of Medicine had it!) went very well on 12 May. The scene was set by Professor John McDermid who felt that nurturing these beasts was better than killing them although we may have to make some hard ethical decisions in the future. This was followed by two speakers from NATS (Simon Brown and Ignacio Mesa) who showed that the principle of Distance Based Separation for flights approaching Heathrow could be changed to Time Based Separation with an increase in capacity and no loss of safety (so the cows are still safe here!) Professor Phil Blythe then looked at the animal from the Automotive and Road Transport point of view and took the prize for the most bovine references and cow animations.   • Nigeria PATW competition 2015

    The second Nigerian PATW took place on the 29th of April at the Plateau State University, Bokkos and was organised by local volunteer Jonathan Obiegba. The event was a huge success with 6 competitors presenting to a large audience of friends, family and colleagues to win a chance to compete in the next stage of the compeition in Abu Dhabi. We are pleased to announce that Adaji Jerry Utene won the day and will be heading to Abu Dhabi in July to compete for a place in the world final in London later in the year. Congratulations Adaji!

  • New Rail Academy in Gateshead

    Newcastle College have officially opened their new £5m Rail Engineering academy, the first in the North East. This will be a regional hub for railway engineering training and development. The Academy will offer a Level 3 Diploma in rail engineering which will be suitable for all age groups and aims to develop engineering apprenticeships with a rail focus plus higer education qualifications tailored specifically to the needs of the industry.   • IET Display At The UWI Alma Jordan Library

    On Friday 10th April, 2015, the University of the West Indies Alma Jordan Library welcomed the IET Trinidad and Tobago Local Network to proudly display a range of IET material, in the Engineering section of the library. This could not have been successfully implemented without the support of Mariella Pilgrim, Faculty Liaison Librarian - Engineering. The display officially ran from the 11th to the 18th April. As a result of the positive feedback from the librarians about the interest shown by members of the engineering faculty as well as students, they suggested that material be provided for other areas within the engineering section.   • The Future of e-aircraft

    One of my volunteers in the Wales South East Network has sent me a link to an interesting article on the future of electric aircraft. Airbus Group is currently involved in a numebr of technological programmes, whose breakthrough could eventually also be applied to an all-electric helicopter and a 90 seat passenger regional aircraft with fully electric or hybrid propulsion.   • Optical Fibres in Oil and Gas: Monitoring at the Speed of Light.

    Optical fibres have been available since the 1970s and are well known for their applications in telecommunications. Less well known are their abilities to perform measurements and to sense a wide range of physical parameters . Andrew Strong, CEng, FIET, MInstP from Cambridge Consultants, will describe the fundamentals of optical fibres and their fabrication. He will also review a number of measurement techniques and how they are used in a broad range of applications in the Oil and Gas Industry.     Local Network volunteer, Derek Newport, has recently written a book about mathematics entitled “ Savour the Fruits of Mathematics…not just HOW mathematics works, but WHY is it important, especially in Engineering ?” Derek has visited schools regularly over the past 15 years, nine years under the Young Enterprise Initiative, followed by 6 years as a STEM ambassador, and during this time has sought the feelings of students on mathematics. Answers generally fell into one of two ‘boxes’, “I don’t like maths” and “I don’t see the point of maths”!
