  • Changing For The Future Of Safety

    Over the past year, the Executive Committee has reviewed the scope and the direction of the Functional Safety Technical and Professional Network (TPN).  We want the network to stay relevant to the Safety community, by covering a wider remit and broadening our vision. Safety has a key part to play in the IET technical structure and we want the TPN to have a key role. We decided to change our name to the System Safety Engineering TPN to reflect this.   Why Change?     We had concerns about what the Functional Safety TPN is about, what it is and where it is going.     Pockets of good things were happening, but no cohesion or direction.     We want a broader vision: not just Functional Safety, but wider systems engineering aspects.     Professional registration is changing and we need to better…

    Final speaker announcement - Jonathan Speed! Bio : Jonathan Speed is a Design and Development Engineer within the Accelerator Design division at ISIS neutron and muon source. Currently, the main projects he is working on include the procurement of new dipole coils for the ISIS main bending magnets, design of a new RF ion source and the production of a new busbar system for the injection kicker magnets. Prior to working at ISIS, he worked as an electromechanical engineer in the Normal Conducting Magnets section at CERN.   • IUOC TECHNICAL VISIT TO BRUNEI SHELL PETROLEUM

    Monday, 15th October 2018, Seria - 19 student members of IET from Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB) have conducted a technical visit to Brunei Shell Petroleum Seria Crude Oil Terminal (BSP SCOT).The session started with safety briefing, followed by explanation of procedures and processes that undergoes in SCOT to the students. Then, they were given a tour around the area together with various fuel tanks in sight along the way. The visit ended with a group photo with BSP personnel.

  • Congratulations To Chin Xin Ying, Recipient Of IET Brunei Local Network Prize

    We would like to extend our heartfelt congratulations to Chin Xin Ying for receiving the IET Local Network Prize.Chin Xin Ying, a graduate from Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in Civil and Structural Engineering, was presented the award by Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Hamzah Bin Haji Sulaiman, Ministry of Education Brunei Darussalam, during Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB) 6th Convocation ceremony 2018 last month. The IET Local Network Prize is an award sponsored by IET Brunei Local Network in celebration the achievement of the best graduate in UTB during convocation ceremony. During the ceremony, UTB presented Certificate of Appreciation to Lt Col (U) Schufin Bin Haji Brahim, Chairperson of IET Brunei Local Network, for the sponsorship of the IET Local Network Prize.

  • IET Fellow’s Experience As An Engineer With Dyslexia

    Brian Back, in spite of his dyslexia, is enjoying an engineering career that has spanned 40 years. He’s pioneered projects such as a wide area smart metering AMR network, a rail temperature monitoring system and most recently, a real-time sewer level and sewer overflow monitoring system. Pursuing an education Brian’s career started at 16 as an apprentice power engineer with Hawker Siddeley. But due to the lack of a GCSE in English, he had to take his education one step at a time. “During my early career, dyslexia was a serious barrier, as educational admission boards would automatically say no at the lack of a formal English qualification. Dyslexia was never mentioned as little was known about it in those days,” he says. “Time and time again, I had to visit in person and plead with heads of…

    Quick review of talk on Tuesday 9th October 2018On Tuesday 9th October, members of the Bucks LN enjoyed a talk on the Chemistry of Adhesives, subtitled "Get Stuck In!".  The talk was given by Professor John Watts FREng from the university of Surrey.  John is an UK expert in how adhesives work.  He and his team of graduates use cutting-edge chemical analysis equipment to understand how adhesives work and the failure modes.  It was a wide-ranging talk much enlivened by John's puckish sense of humour.  His tale of his experiences of investigating beer-can widget failure was very refreshing ...

  • Proton Beam Therapy System Based On Linac Technology

    Announcing another speaker for our Annual Event Veliko Dimov has a PhD in accelerator physics from Bogazici University (Istanbul, Turkey). From 2011 to 2016 he worked on the commissioning of Linac4 accelerator and on the design of a high frequency RFQ (radio frequency quadrupole) accelerator at CERN. Since February 2017 he has been working at AVO-ADAM on the construction and commissioning of a medical proton linac at 3GHz. He is specialized on linear accelerator design, beam dynamics, commissioning and operation. Synopsis Advanced Oncotherapy is developing a unique, fully integrated, proton therapy system. The proton beam will be accelerated with a linac (Linac for Image Guided Hadron Therapy, LIGHT) up to 230 MeV and then delivered to the treatment room with the high energy beam transport…

  • The Aerospace Network Were Hot On The Wings Of HAPS

    “All air vehicles are limited by physics, some by imagination, all others by fuel”.  So said Chris Kelleher, inventor of Zephyr, the solar electric stratospheric unmanned aircraft that provides the airborne platform for the Airbus version of HAPS.Following relatively hot on the wings of their other visit to Farnborough to the AAIB, the Network organised another visit to Farnborough, this time to Airbus, where the company has recently opened the Chris Kelleher building, a production facility for Zephyr.   Three aircraft have been built so far, for the UK MOD as launch customer.  There were many visitors during the 2018 Farnborough air show, as the Kelleher building is a couple of minutes’ walk from the southern perimeter.  In fact, during the period of the air show , Zephyr S set both altitude…

  • North East Exhibition For Future Engineers

    Here are a few photos from the 2-day event which took place last week at the new beacon of Light building in Sunderland. The event attracted over 60 local engineering/technology exhibitors as well as over 2500 school children across the North East, promoting engineering as a career. Our stand was well attended which was exhibiting a working; rotating 3-D laser printed model jet engine with throttle control and condition monitoring sensors, an Arduino unit programmed to playback names typed in morse code and a working sterling engine and a large TV monitor showing engineering related videos. An unexpected visitor was Tony Roche, the new IMechE President to see at first hand an event involving the joint engineering institutions.

  • Understanding The Root Causes Of A Lack Of Diversity In Engineering

    We all know the theoretical benefits of a diverse engineering workforce. I say theoretical because we are not at a place when a majority of engineering companies sector can demonstrate the actuality of the statement. To understand why that's the case, I believe we need to understand the root causes of a lack of diversity and keep asking the "why" questions. Why is it that we don't have more people from all backgrounds, all colours, all ethnicities, all abilities in the engineering workforce? Why is it that when you look at the Boardroom of the majority (if not all) of UK engineering companies the view is very homogenous around the table?   Why is it that I struggle to name ten, no even five, CEOs of big engineering organisations who happen to be women, or Asian, or from the LGBTQ community…
