    As the taxi whirred along Nassim Road, the driver noticed the elegant number 28 and pulled over. I alighted, and greeted Dr Arseniy Kusnetsov, who also arrived at the same time, at the doorstep of Eden Hall.  The prestigious AF Harvey Prize winner of 2016 was well prepared for his public lecture, and his eyes gleamed with passion, eager to share his research breakthroughs before a large audience of researchers, professors, and technical experts. As one of the organisers, I had been preparing to meet and greet a long list of 96 registered guests.   • Thunderbolts and Lightning

    About 45 IET members, members of other engineering groups and guests were thoroughly entertained and informed by Rhys Philips, an IET member and a research engineer with Airbus, part of EADS.  He works for the division of the company that designs and tests methods that ensure aircraft that are struck by lightning stay in the air.   We were lucky that Rhys had just happened to be travelling to Ottawa after attending the CCA meeting and Volunteer conference in Orlando a couple of weeks ago.   Following the opening bars of Queens "Bohemian Rhapsody", Rhys spent a good hour and a half thoroughly explaining how lightning is formed, whether or not is dangerous and thoroughly demystifying some of the myths we have all heard about this phenomenon.   Lightning is formed when two surfaces build up sufficient…

    A fortnight ago we met  Winnie , Community Manager for our Region. This  week I'd like to introduce  Peta Blight ,  a former IET YP Chairperson , Leadership Programme mentor , current IET Senior Committee Treasurer and a member of more committees than I care to recall. Always on the go, almost always right, she is an inspirational member of the IET that has represented us at conferences around the world, most recently at the New Zealand Student Recruitment and Retention Committee summit.     Hi Folks, As we kick off our calendar of events for the next year we have two very useful events to kick off with- CPD explained  will be held on the  Thurs 21 Sept 2017  in the  Titanic Pumphouse .     ...firstly many thanks to Fabrizio, Marie for welcoming us to the ZH FabLab - we got a great impression of the facilities and we could take-away many creative ideas :-) Thanks also to all the participants who turned out on this hot, sweltering evening - it was nice to see some old and new faces - some young as well... The event started with Fabrizio giving us a short presentation of the FabLab before then giving us a guided tour of the Fablab itself.  Fabrizio began with their prized "Laser Cutter", which we quickly discovered was his favourite (as for many other FabLab'ers).  He explained that although the lab had many other delights, this was usually the most heavily utilised, because of it's speed and versatility.  We quickly saw why - the intricate (3D) objects we held in our hands, which…

  • 2017 Americas PATW Venue - Wildlife

    There is a warning sign for wildlife at the resort. There was a discussion if there are alligators and snakes in the pond at the resort. Plenty of baby lizards were running along all pathways for sure! Can you spot the warning sign for wild life in the picture? (It is located in front of the pond near the middle) I was lucky to spot a swimming baby alligator later. Children rushed to the spot when they saw me video-tapping the alligator!

    IET Toronto LN supports interests in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). We have access to kits that can be used at fairs, schools and careers events. These kits covered all age groups, from flashlight kits for the younger children to MicroBits for the youth. We nuture Engineers for tomorrow. You will find fun if you like to play with technology. It will be a fun event for families as well. You will spend quality time with your children while working with the kit.     The IET Americas PATW 2017 competetion was held at Disneyland, Orlando. Contestants (from left to right) are Gideon Mentie; Sayana Saithu; Vanessa Di Battista; Karan Sharma; Macy Kuang (Toronto LN); Seles Bhola; Jane Xiang; Rohullah Latif.  Congratulations to Rohullah Latif (Southern California LN) with his presentation “Regenerative Medicine: Restoring Hope”; and runner-up Vanessa Di Battista with her presentstion “Geosynthetics and Antarctica: Applications and Performance of Geosynthetic Technologies in Antarctica Soil Remediation”. Rohullah Latif will attend the PATW final in UK in November. Americas have been winner of PATW final in UK for the past two years. Hooray! Keep it!

    On the weekend of the 19/20 August, CCAP held a Communities Volunteer Conference (CVC) in Auckland, New Zealand.  For those who were there - thank you very much for your attendance.  I really appreciate you giving up your weekend, and I hope you found it useful.   For those who weren't there, unfortunately we were limited on the numbers we could invite, but each Local Network (LN) should have had at least one attendee, and they will be talking to rest of the committee about what they learned over the weekend.  To help them do this, I created a PDF of my slides on CCAP and the CCAP Strategy, and have attached them to this blog post - there's nothing secret in there!  If you're interested in what I talked about, then please take a look  .   • WA Shines at Asia Pacific!

    Rovik Olsen from the Western Australia Young Professionals committee has taken home the grand prize on 19 August 2017 (Saturday) when he was crowned the  CHAMPION  of Present Around The World Asia Pacific Final. Rovik will be representing the Asia Pacific region at the grand final in London this year. Rovik is currently a fourth year student at the Edith Cowan University (ECU) here in Perth.     This past weekend, Allan Casey, John Manville and Sonia Travaglini of the IET NorCal committee attended the Americas Community Volunteers Conference (CVC) in Orlando, Florida. This event is held every two to three years and brings all of the Local Networks (LNs) together to learn what has happened in each of the areas and to hear about each other’s plans for the future. The specific goals of the meeting are to: 1. To inspire: provide an interactive platform for members to become more engaged with the IET 2.
