Success For Simon Langton Schools In Canterbury!

Three teens from the Simon Langton schools in Canterbury have won a trip to the FIRST LEGO League World Festival in the USA, after winning the National Final of the IET’s FIRST LEGO League (FLL) UK robotics competition. The competition is one of the IET’s leading initiatives to encourage more young people to study STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) subjects in order to pursue a career in engineering. Oli English, Emma English and Carlos Purchase-Galarza, who made up the ‘Invicta’ team, beat off competition from 29 other teams at the event at Loughborough University on Saturday, 1 February to be crowned FLL UK Champions. UK Storms destroy Key railway line

Sad to see the images of the suspended railway line at Dawlish and other parts of the South West route. I travel along that line when I go to visit the Devon & Cornwall Network Committee and its a lovely train journey. Here's hoping that the Network Rail team get the line back on track, although looking at the appalling destruction caused by the weather, its going to be many months of sheer hard work and brilliant engineering to achieve that.

Keeping to our tried and tested single track format with the usual relaxed and informal approach, LAPC 2013 was the ideal place to network and exchange ideas with those from academia, industry and government. Each session featured highly respected invited speakers covering topics in Space Antennas, Radio Propagation, Antenna Modelling, Emerging Technologies in Antennas and the Latest Developments in Antenna Measurements and Simulations. A smartphone and tablet said to be the first designed by an African company have been launched. The products, designed by Congolese entrepreneur Verone Mankou, are manufactured in China. Nigeria PATW 2013 held for the first time on Campus!

The Nigeria PATW was held at the weekend on Saturday 29 June 2013. The Delta State University played host providing the Institution's Electronic Library as Venue for the event. An excited group of engineering students were in attendance. Unfortunately not one of the 5 entrants from the University to the Competition made presentations as they were all recent graduates and called up to compulsory national service a few days to the event. Undaunted, University Management were ahead to support the event to success. All three presenations were from students of the neighbouring Federal University of Petroleum Resources. The local IET Committee are grateful for the support of Engr. Smith Otuagoma, HOD, Electrical Electronics Engineering who was University appointed fascilitator for the event.
