The Manufacturing Technical Network (TN) held its first in-person/hybrid meeting for over 2 years at Savoy Place today. In a lively meeting full of challenge and discussion we finalized details for the remaining 2022 programme of events and started the planning process for 2023. Upcoming 2022 events include Future Roles In Manufacturing, a series of 3 meetings including an in-person networking opportunity covering Digital Manufacturing and a workshop event looking at the Future for Manufacturing Automation. This latter event is being organised jointly with the Robotics and Control & Automation TNs. In 2023 we are very excited to be be supporting an IET Annual Prize for Manufacturing apprentices. The topic of resilience has become even more prominent in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. In this context, the IET’s Resilience Working Group has produced a short paper called ‘ Engineering a more resilient world ’, featuring the thoughts of engineers across sectors including from energy, digital, design and manufacturing. This thought leadership piece contains recommendations to government, the research, education and engineering communities that: Government should embed a whole system approach to resilience and resilience planning, Ambitious targets should be set for research into this area, and Resilience should become an integral part of the training engineers receive. When it was announced at the start of the year that I would be stepping down as Chief Executive and Secretary of the IET, my leaving date seemed a long way off. Now it is just a matter of days to go before I start the next chapter of my life, spending more time with my family and seeking new personal challenges. We are happy to announce that the Draft for Public Comment for IET Code of Practice for Electrical Safety Management 2nd edition has now gone live. The CoP sets out the principles for effective electrical safety management and does not reference standards or legislation. It identifies the need for a management system, not the detail of how the activity should be done but does outline what might be expected in a successful management system. This second edition has been updated to include considerations around the management of change, the implications of outsourcing work on the electrical equipment and installations, and an updated self-assessment tool to identify what systems exist and how effective they are in managing responsibilities. Tony Purnell, former Head of Technology at British Cycling, will talk about how engineering helped Great Britain top the cycling medal table at the Tokyo Olympics. Professor Tony Purnell FREng, FRSA was the Head of Technical Development at British Cycling, where he worked across all aspects of technology – from improving data analysis to assisting the coaches with the development of organisational software and tools to optimise rider performance. Because of this latest development I am proposing a special WALLPAPER to convert the heat of a room into electricity and store it into the special batteries of the Home/Business. 30 June 2022 12.30 BST. Register Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) has been the main polymeric articulating implant material for the hip implant. Acetabular cup is made of UHMWPE in its unmodified form or with partial cross-linking and with Vitamin E added into it as the anti-oxidant. Many efforts in the past have been made on finding an alternative material to UHMWPE in the hope of improving upon the already excellent tribological performance of this polymer. Several of UHMWPE composites and other polymers such as polyetheretherketone (PEEK) and polymer gels have been researched with some even tried in for in-vivo tests. The UN estimates that more than 6.4 million Ukrainian refugees have been forced to flee their homes and seek safety as a result of the Russian invasion . This is one of the largest and fastest refugee movements in Europe since the end of World War II putting enormous pressure on host countries' border control and public services. Poland is currently receiving the largest number of refugees - 3.4 million and counting - with the population in Warsaw increasing by 17% in just a month.
