  • PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT NEWS: Systems Engineering

    Our systems engineering courses provide both practical and tangible skills that can be used day-to-day in the design of engineering systems. We offer two different courses focusing around Systems Engineering; ‘Mastering Requirements using MBSE’ and ‘A Model Based Approach to Systems Engineering’. These courses are both based around the IET book ‘ SysML for Systems Engineering: A model-based approach ’, with a copy of the book being given to delegates who attend the courses. In addition to this, the authors of the book, Jon Holt and Simon Perry, are also the trainers for this course, meaning you will receive high quality training from the experts in the field.   • Vulcan Bomber Update

    Now that the Vulcan Bomber is in storage along with the Canberra and Swift aircraft at Doncaster Sheffield airport until such time as a new hangar is built to house the aircraft, I thought I'd share this video with community members.  Hopefully if developments go to plan it could be the end of the year when the new hangar is ready.   See here for more details on the current status.  If you've not yet had a chance to catch up with the presentations from our 'Addressing Ageing Aircraft Sustainment Issues' seminar, then click here.

  • Present Around The World Manchester Heat 2017

    Present Around the World Manchester Heat 2017 took place in Manchester Metropolitan University on the 15th March. Six presenters presented a range of engineering disciplines, and all were of very high standard. All scores were very close and unfortunately we could only have one winner! Congratulations to our winner, Paul Gavin, who will represent the Manchester Network to compete in the next heat, the Northern Area Final, at UCLan Preston in June, he will also receive his certificate and prize at our North West Excellence Awards 2017 dinner on the 31st March. Also congratulations to our runner up, Christian Bridge.     In two weeks we’ll be heading to Glasgow University for the IET Colloquium on Millimetre-wave and Terahertz Engineering & Technology 2017 event. This is a joint event between the Antennas & Propagation, RF and Microwave and Electromagnetics TPN’s. The event is a chance to hear from researchers presenting the latest research on the areas of millimetre-wave and terahertz engineering and technology.   We have a full programme and poster session planned for the day including presentations from our invited speakers, Dr Sherif Sayed Ahmed and Dr. Khaled Elgaid , University of Glasgow, UK.   Are you registered?   • IET Northumbria Students' Projects Competition 2017

    The annual IET Northumbria students' projects competition, organised by Dr Peter Minns, IET Northumbria Network Chairman, was held this year on 8th March at Northumbria University. The entries from all three of the local universities, Newcastle, Sunderland and Northumbria were of a very high standard  with topics including ‘Biometric recognition’ and ‘Reduction in operational CO2 emissions of buildings’. After extensive discussions with the candidates, the judges Sheng Yuan and Paul Cordes arrived at their decisions as shown in the attached spreadsheet.

  • No Frameworks Please – It's Cloud. (Excel London - CloudExpo Europe Event).

    500 Exhibitors and 600 hundred speakers, all under one roof. The CloudExpo event taking place at the world class Excel Exhibition Center in London this week is full of revelations. The arena is broken into 4 ontologies; Cloud Security, Big Data, Smart IOT London and Data Center World. Vendors held their traditional stands and in addition, seated floor space was allocated for speakers to perform open style high octane seminars. Visitors had the choice to attend conferences on super fuelled scheduled topics within dedicated theatres. There were multiple seminars, talks and conferences all taking place at the same time.     We are delighted to announce Professor Martin Cowie, Professor of Cardiology, Imperial College London, will be speaking at the next Future of Medicine event. Join us to hear Professor Cowie speaking on “Technology and the Physician: Hope or Hype?” This talk will review the evidence that technological advances improve health outcomes for people with heart disease, focusing on the role of remote monitoring. In theory this should improve outcomes and be a better experience for the patient and the family: expertise goes to the patient rather than the other way round. A lot has been learned in the past two decades on what the key elements for success are, and some of these lessons will be highlighted in this short presentation.   • New IET Network To Lead On Internet Of Things

    The concept of the Internet of Things (IoT) touches upon every sector and almost every engineering discipline. It is clear that the IET should have a presence in this area, so the development of a new IoT Technical and Professional Network (TPN) has begun. A scoping event late last year identified a number of opportunities for the IET to support the sector. These include providing a forum for developers and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), spreading awareness and adoption, creating a working group and developing partnerships. “There are a great many initiatives and organisations already underway producing excellent guidance, standardisation and technology.     In an evening organised by our YP representative, Georges Anke, the Ottawa LN was introduced to the intricacies of RISComputing and the ARM core processors.  This was held at the RA Centre on the 23rd February. We were fortunate to welcome Graham Eatherley. Graham is a instructor at Carleton University in Ottawa where he currently teaches a group of 3rd years the "ins and outs" of real time systems.  Graham is an experienced researcher and teacher. He worked in the Telecommunications industry for over 30 years and on retirement returned to school to complete post-graduate degrees in Artificial Intelligence and Robotics. He is currently a Contract Instructor in the Engineering Faculty at Carleton University where he has taught several Microcomputer and Embedded Systems courses. Additionally…

    Neil Hatton, the CEO of the UK Screen Alliance, is an experienced and well-known figure in post-production and broadcast in the UK having worked in the sector since 1979. He started with a stint in the BBC VT department in the basement of Television Centre. For more than 20 years, he worked at MD/CEO or owner level within post production houses in Soho like Frontier Post and Azimuth. In 1992, he pioneered non-linear editing and became the first person to cut a long-form documentary on an NLE in the UK.
